  For more information, visit https://www.alberta.ca/transportation-and-economic-corridors.  Role Responsibilities Key Responsibilities As the Operations Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and coordinated operation and maintenance of provincial highways and other roads in the municipalities around  the City of Calgary. This position requires strong collaboration, technical expertise, and stakeholder engagement.Liaison & Coordination

Coordinate maintenance activities across municipal and provincial stakeholders to ensure continuity of the transportation system across jurisdictional boundaries. Act as the primary liaison with maintenance contractors, municipality officials, consultants, and external partners. Coordinate access and activities within the provincial highway right-of-way for internal business units (e.g., bridges, construction, infrastructure).

  Highway Maintenance Operations

Partner with maintenance contractors to deliver safe and effective highway maintenance programs. Support planning, budgeting, inspection, and quality assurance to ensure services are cost-effective and defensible. Contribute to maintenance specifications, budgeting, and forecasting activities. Participate as a member of the provincial maintenance budget allocation task group. Role Responsibilities cont. Technical & Operational Review

Review roadway and traffic engineering designs for operational feasibility. Assess route surveys, consultant projects, and engineering proposals to identify risks and potential operational issues. Evaluate municipality and utility infrastructure proposals affecting provincial right-of-way.

  Communications & Stakeholder Management

Ensure timely response and resolution of public and stakeholder concerns related to provincial highways. Draft correspondence and briefing materials for leadership. Represent the department in meetings with municipalities, agencies, and community groups.

University graduation in Engineering or Applied Science or Geology or Geophysics, or graduation from a recognized School of Architecture, plus five years related experience; or equivalent as described below. Eligible for membership with the APEGA or AAA. Class 5 Driver’s License.

  Equivalencies:  

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

  Assets:  

Supervisory experience and urban transportation experience. Effective written and verbal communication and public relations skills.  Specialized training in responding to the media and doing in-camera interviews.  Ability to prepare recommendations and present information to department managers and executive in verbal or written format in a clear and concise manner for decision making purposes. Extensive knowledge of highway maintenance, operation and construction procedures. Highway and road planning and design experience is an asset. The position is responsible for the day-to-day administration of maintenance and operations, functions in the service area, relative to established standards and departmental policies, as outlined in the Contract Administration, Contact Specifications, Maintenance Standards, Uniform Traffic Control Device, Materials Design and Highway Signing Manuals. Must ensure adherence to the Highway Traffic Act, Public Highways Development Act, and Public Service Act. Creativity and innovative solutions to transfer initiatives, complex maintenance and construction problems.
