Job Summary
The Plant Maintenance role is responsible for maintaining the reliability, safety, and optimal performance of all on-site equipment. This includes inspecting, repairing, fabricating, and replacing components, as well as performing routine preventative maintenance in accordance with established safety standards and equipment specifications.
This role requires close collaboration with other team members to ensure maintenance activities are completed in a timely and effective manner, minimizing operational downtime and supporting overall productivity.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, technical proficiency, and a proactive approach to equipment care.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review, understand and adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) relevant to work area.
- Comply with all safety regulations and general site rules.
- Perform preventative maintenance on machinery and mechanical equipment including engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, production equipment, etc.
- Troubleshoots mechanical issues using diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, manufacturers instructions, and engineering specifications.
- Identify equipment malfunctions using precision measuring and testing instruments.
- Remove defective components and replaces parts as necessary.
- Communicate with production personnel regarding routine maintenance to minimize downtime.
- Conduct equipment inspections as required.
- Fabricate or adjust repair parts as needed.
- Maintain inventory of equipment, parts, and supplies by anticipating needs, placing orders and verifying receipts.
- Respond to inquiries and prepare maintenance reports as required.
- Participate in workshops and reviews technical publications to stay current with industry standards.
- Document and communicate maintenance actions, irregularities, and requirements to ensure continuity across teams.
- Enter maintenance data accurately into company software systems.
- Assist in developing maintenance plans and implementing equipment upgrades.
- Complete required safety and equipment training or retraining.
- Utilize all necessary safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Ensure cleanliness and upkeep of yard and facilities areas, including roadways, washrooms, kitchen, locker rooms, exits, lighting, etc.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings or incident investigations as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support operational efficiency.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Valid Red Seal/Journeyperson certification as an Industrial Millwright or Industrial Mechanic issued by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certificate Commission (SATCC) or an equivalent recognized provincial authority; completion of training through an accredited apprenticeship program would be considered an asset.
- Minimum two (2) years of relevant industrial millwright/mechanic experience is required.
- Second and/or third year apprentices will be considered.
- G.E.D. or high school diploma is required.
- Proficient in welding and fabrication techniques.
- Strong understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, motors, shaft alignment, belts, bearings, pulleys, and conveyors.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and engineering drawings.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical failures.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Strong time management and organization skills.
Work Environment
- Part of a small maintenance team.
- Some overtime and call-ins required.
- Industrial plant setting with hands-on mechanical work.
- Must be able to wear all PPE, including steel-toed boots and safety glasses.
- Must be able to work at heights as required.
- Essential job functions are performed in all types of weather conditions, some work may be performed inside plant buildings, but many are performed outside; this involves working in hot, humid, wet, dusty, cool, and cold environments.
