Job Summary

The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies.

Reporting to the Outdoor Classroom and Landscape Manager, the Landscape Technician will work as part of a team to carry out landscaping tasks, turfgrass maintenance, greenhouse tasks, and nursery duties as well as snow and ice removal.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain campus gardens and greenspaces.Perform all aspects of landscape horticulture in the maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub bed plantings as well as turfgrass maintenance. Assist in all aspects of greenhouse and nursery production. Operate and maintain landscape and turf equipment- tractors, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, hand tools, etc. Supervise and train student employees in aspects of grounds and landscape maintenance, as well as snow/ice removal from walkways and building entrances. Monitor snow/ice conditions to maintain safe walkways and building entrances. Remove ice/ snow on all walkways, staircases and building entrances on campus including plowing, salting/sanding and shoveling.

Note

This position will require work outside of regular office hours, e.g. early morning and late evening work during peak times. Compensation and scheduling will be in accordance with the collective agreement.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications

Diploma in landscape horticulture, landscape design, or horticulture plus a minimum of three years’ relevant experience in the landscape industry (or equivalent combination of training and experience). Experience operating and maintaining a range of landscape and turf equipment. Strong communication skills with proven ability to work in a team environment Demonstrated commitment to safe working practices for self and others as well as strong attention to detail while multi-tasking and working independently. Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver’s License, and proven working knowledge of MS Office and Outlook. Current first aid and defensive driving training or completion of same within six months from date of hire. Ability to work outdoors including in inclement weather conditions such as heat, dust, cold, rain, snow, and ice, and with the possibility of insect bites or allergic reactions to plants. Ability to continuously stand as well as walk, crouch, lift, carry, shovel, weed, plant, etc. for extended periods of time, lift up to 50 pounds and work with loud equipment.
