Position Overview: We're looking for an HVDC Apparatus Engineer to join our HVDC Station Design team, someone who enjoys tackling complex power system challenges and working closely with critical equipment used in converter stations. In this role, you'll partner with senior technical experts to develop practical specifications, evaluate and select major electrical apparatus, and ensure designs meet performance, quality, and reliability expectations from concept through to completion. You'll take on technically challenging assignments related to equipment design and application, provide expert support to internal teams across the organization, and collaborate with external consultants and vendors to deliver specialized work, giving you end-to-end exposure to large-scale HVDC infrastructure projects that directly impact grid performance.
Responsibilities: Develop detailed technical specifications and procurement process for complex Station Apparatus for AC and HVDC Converter Stations. Responsible for analysis of technical and commercial data as well as leading the negotiation process with vendors in preparation of recommendations for the supply of complex apparatus. Provide expert consultation, training, etc. to all areas of the Corporation on the application and design considerations of complex station apparatus for AC and HVDC Converter Stations. Lead complex apparatus design reviews to ensure technical requirements have been satisfied and inspect apparatus and witness tests on equipment as required. Develop and maintain specifications in accordance with CSA, ANSI/IEEE and IEC standards while utilizing best utility practices in conjunction with manufacturers. Support Technical staff in the detailed review of apparatus drawings, manuals and test reports for completeness and accuracy. Advise planning and design personnel in the development of station layouts, complex apparatus requirements and station configuration with regard to operation and protection considerations. Provide expert advice to all areas of the Corporation on projects with short lead times or special requirements, including urgent application or failure investigations of complex electrical apparatus. Liaison with Consultants performing assigned work.
Qualifications: Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of seven years' experience in related utility work covering apparatus procurement, complex engineering apparatus design along with construction and testing standards. Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time). Demonstrated ability to provide expert technical guidance related to complex electrical apparatus for AC and HVDC Converter Stations. Fully knowledgeable of electrical apparatus standards and codes. Detailed working knowledge of utility power systems and procedures used in its operation and maintenance. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex engineering details, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to work with all Corporation employees, manufacturers and consultants in a spirit of cooperation in accordance with Corporate Operating Principles. Extensive experience in design and procedures including evaluation and purchase of complex apparatus and in coordination of overall project processes. Thorough knowledge of Corporation policies, procedures and regulations. Must obtain and maintain a current Personal Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513. Possess a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $52.88-$72.45 Hourly, $101,332.40-$138,828.30 Annually.
