About the position

Duties
Perform daily and periodic inspections, maintenance and certification of air cushion vehicles (ACVs) to maintain certification and validity of flight permits, in accordance with seaworthiness manuals, the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, (CSA, 2001) and the high speed code, under the authority delegated to him/her by his/her ACV Maintenance Engineer certificate issued by Transport Canada (TC) in accordance with TC requirements. Perform unscheduled or unexpected maintenance following a systems inspection, a failure, incident or malfunction report by crews or technicians, or a new or revised seaworthiness directive or service bulletin.Attest to post-maintenance certification for maintenance performed on a component, subassembly and/or ACV in accordance with the delegated authority and in compliance with approved data, TCMS’s TP5579 and applicable seaworthiness standards (CSA, 2001).Make minor or major modifications to the ACV, its components, equipment, and special parts and tools in accordance with the manufacturer’s technical publications and other applicable approved standards. This includes the shop manufacture of some special parts and tools that are not commercially available.

  • Marine Emergency Duties STCW – Basic Safety
  • Valid Health Canada Occupational Health Medical for seagoing personnel and/or a Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate for the occupation group to which they have applied (Deck, Engine, or Catering) – No limitations
  • For Canadian Citizens, Valid Canadian Passport or for Canadian Permanent Residents, A Valid Passport from a recognized Passport Issuing Authority.
  • Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program – RPP
  • Willingness to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved safety footwear, and maintain job related personal safety equipment
  • Must be willing and able to perform overtime work as required, often on short notice;
  • Must be willing and able to work shiftwork, rotating hours, and variable hours of work;
  • Must be willing and able to travel by air, land and by sea.

  • A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (see Note)

Note:
The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are:

  • A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or
  • An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Candidates who already meet both of the following criteria must be accepted as meeting the secondary school diploma requirement:

  • Candidates who have achieved a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; and
  • Candidates who have been appointed or deployed for an indeterminate period to a position in the EG classification.

The opportunity to be assessed by at least one of the two employer-approved alternatives must be offered to candidates who have not previously met the secondary school diploma requirement.
Candidates who were appointed or deployed on an indeterminate basis using an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience meet the secondary school requirement for the EG classification only and must be reassessed for entry to other classifications on the basis of this alternative.

Occupational Certification:

  • Possession of a Transport Canada ACV Engineering license Class 1 or 2 and/or T/C marine engineering certificate of competency, or T/C Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

certificate of competency or Diesel engineer certificate recognized by a province, or general engineer certificate recognized by a province.

Experience:

  • Experience interpreting specifications, schematics, and component drawings in order to perform system wide, or equipment specific maintenance.
  • Experience in the trouble-shooting of fire suppression systems.

  • Knowledge of the maintenance procedures and trouble-shooting techniques for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems aboard vessels, hovercraft, aircraft or helicopters.

  • Experience in the maintenance of ship or Aircraft electrical generation and distribution systems.
  • Experience in dynamic balancing of Propellers.
  • Experience working on ACV over 10,000 Kgs Maximum all up weight or higher.
