About the role

Industrial Metals (2011) is in need of a permanent full-time Heavy Equipment Operator who will be responsible for operating equipment in a scrap metal yard environment. Heavy Equipment includes material handling machines, excavators with shears, loaders, and skid steers.

Reporting to the Yard Supervisor, the ideal candidate should have substantial experience in operating heavy equipment and extensive knowledge of their trade. The Heavy Equipment Operator must have strong time management and organizational skills, be both a team player and work well on their own with minimal or no supervision. A strong commitment to safety is a must.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Primary tasks include inspecting, sorting and grading scrap metal and processing, loading, and unloading trucks

  • Ability to operate the equipment in a safe and productive manner

  • Be compliant with all regulatory requirements and established safe work practices

  • Demonstrate skill in the identification of key hazards and use of strategies to work safely, such as: inspecting shred feed, flammables and heavy iron

  • Start-up and shutdown of equipment safely, by following comprehensive pre-operational checks and procedures

  • Maintain and monitor equipment, following maintenance procedures and monitoring gauges

  • Maintain cleanliness of the equipment and your assigned work area

  • Assist maintenance with repairs if necessary

  • Advise management of any requirements for maintenance or repairs

  • Other duties as assigned by management

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a heavy equipment operator. Extensive experience running a material handler in a recycling environment would be considered a major asset

  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license (or higher)

  • Good mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity

  • Quick and attentive learner

  • Strong attention to details

  • Commitment towards working safely and following all safety standards

  • Good English communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally/respectfully with a positive attitude in a fast-paced working environment

  • High level of personal integrity

  • Strong work ethic and ability to complete work in a timely manner

  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision; must be self-directed

  • Team player attitude

Work Conditions & Important Relevant Information:

  • Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 pm – 4:30 pm, some overtime & weekends when the need arises

  • Will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in elevated cabs (up to 15ft high). Cabs are non-smoking

  • Prolonged exposure to loud equipment/machinery

  • Physical ability to lift up to 50lbs (or on occasions a little over that with the help of co-workers/tools)

  • Must have access to vehicle/means of transportation to report to work as scheduled

  • Own tools/equipment required: Steel-toed safety boots
