Primary Responsibilities
The Damage Prevention Technician (DPT) is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground utilities within a designated area. This includes providing detailed sketches of the located area to the requester. Using company-provided equipment, DPTs will identify utilities such as gas, water, sewer, fiber optic cables, and electrical lines, mark them using spray paint or flags, and document the findings. Other duties include but are not limited to:
- Complete Locates: Use electronic devices, including a receiver wand and transmitter, to locate and verify underground utilities.
- Marking and Documentation: Mark utility and create detailed drawings of the located area. Prepare reports and documentation verifying marked utilities.
- Health and Safety: Work in compliance with all health, safety, and environmental legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and company policies. Employ a safety-first mindset when engaging with customers and communities.
- Stakeholder Consultation: Collaborate with contractors, developers, and builders regarding the location of underground utilities.
- Equipment Management: Ensure the safeguarding and proper use of company equipment and vehicles.
Successful candidates will have the following requirements:
- Have a valid AB Class 5 Driver’s License and clean three (3) year Driver’s Abstract as this position includes a company vehicle for business purposes only
- Minimum five (5) years of Utility locate experience
- Must possess Utility Safety Partners (USP) endorsed Locate & Marking certification
- Must possess USP endorsed Ground Disturbance Level II Certification
- The ability to physically work outdoors daily in all weather conditions, walk short and long distances on uneven surfaces and ditches, lifting and load equipment up to 9kg (20lbs) in and out of the vehicle several times per day, carry/swing 20lbs of equipment while walking and frequently bend, twist, squat, or kneel.
- The ability to work weekends, on call and overtime as required

- Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills
- Exceptional presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Excellent organizational skills, with emphasis on priorities and goal setting
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to interact with all levels of the organization: internal & external
- A clean criminal background check
- Ability to start immediately is an asset
