KMC specializes in high-performance alloys and friction materials from raw materials to finished products under one roof in Orillia, Canada. Manufacturing unique heat-resistant alloys and high-nickel/chrome alloys primarily for the petrochemical industries, Kubota leads the industry in quality and advanced technology. As per customer requirements, Kubota designs and casts centrifugal pipes and static castings of fittings, which are then machined, welded (Automatic, Semi-Automatic, Orbital & Manual), GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, followed by in-house NDT (RT, PT, VT), in-house DT, R&D lab, as well as hydro testing.
Summary:
Under the guidance of the Manager, this position is responsible for performing routine sample preparation and metallurgical lab-testing of cast steel samples in support of the Melting operations.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (BUT NOT LIMITED TO):

Work in a safe manner consistent with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and KMC policies and ensure work areas comply with proper housekeeping and safety procedures at all times
-
Wear all required PPE, as designed, as per department and job function requirements
-
Safely operate all equipment and machinery according to established safety rules, SOPs, and at set standard rates
-
Maintain full product traceability as per ISO and department standards
-
Practice safe working techniques and adhere to environmental, health and safety (EHS) policies, guidelines, and procedures
-
Perform on a daily basis, assisting in a variety of quality control tasks to accurately evaluate the chemical composition of steel castings
-
Preparation of samples using a variety of abrasive saws, a pedestal grinder, and surface grinders
-
Maintain lot traceability for each processing lot of material
-
Accurately evaluate chemical analysis results for compliance and specification, then communicate them to the corresponding melt station
-
Accurately compile data into simple data summaries and reports as needed
-
Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as required

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering Technologist from an accredited college or university
- Training certificates in Health and Safety or related courses are considered an asset
- Minimum of 1-2 years of laboratory experience evaluating samples and/or chemical processing and preparing reports
- Demonstrated computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e Word, Excel, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines
- Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated problem-solving/troubleshooting skills
- Laboratory experience with metals processing equipment is an asset
- Demonstrated positive work record and excellent attendance record
- Ability to meet the physical and sensory demands of the job
- Attention to detail, reliable, methodical and with a team spirit
- Strong interest in training on and learning new laboratory methods
Physical / Psychological Demands & Working Conditions:

Standing and walking for prolonged periods

Manual dexterity for handling small parts and tools

Lifting and moving equipment/materials (up to 25-50 lbs)

Visual acuity for reading blueprints and inspecting parts

Exposure to noise, dust, and fluctuating temperatures (requires PPE)

High levels of concentration and focus

Rotating shift work of days, afternoons and overnights on a two-week rotation
