As an Environmental Specialist in Operational Excellence supporting Water Services within the Operational Services Department, you are responsible for the maintenance and continual improvement of an environmental management system registered to ISO 14001:2015. The position involves developing, coordinating, communicating and delivering a variety of environmental management programs and services within the business unit to meet regulatory compliance and reporting requirements, business needs, and performance targets. Primary duties include:

  • Provide technical guidance to operations and infrastructure teams on various environmental risks, compliance requirements and mitigation plans for their work.
  • Identify risks and opportunities for improvement in environmental management across all operations within the Water Utility.
  • Administer the Environmental Management System (EMS) including documentation and performance reporting and participate in internal and external audits.
  • Consult and report regularly to the EnviroSystem team and Senior Management team to identify and address environmental aspects of the business.
  • Coordinate and deliver environmental awareness training for Water Services staff.
  • Participate in an operational community of practice for regular exchange of information and provide support to other corporate initiatives.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Applied Science, Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in environmental program management, environmental protection and mitigation, and environmental risk and quality management.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use OR the ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Environmental Management Systems.
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Experience in the following areas is considered an asset: environmental regulatory requirements, water utility operations, and environmental emergency plans.
  • Successful performance in this position requires enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals who are strong team players and work well in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced work environment. The successful applicant must be flexible, able to work independently, and maintain good judgment and political sensitivity.
  • Well-developed communication skills and attention to detail are also essential.

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees.
