  Description:  About us:Home to over 40 departments and institutes, the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine lies at the heart of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network and is a global leader in ground-breaking research and education, spanning clinical medicine, basic science and the rehabilitation sciences sectors.Your opportunity:The Division of Teaching Labs (DTL) supports the delivery of laboratory courses and practicals by providing laboratory infrastructure, experimental needs, and technical expertise to departments within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. DTL focuses on providing sustainable, effective, and responsive service to the departments, and ensuring a positive, productive, and safe learning and work environment. We advance youth STEM initiatives through collaborative and in-house outreach and educational programming.As Laboratory Technician, you will support teaching activities by contributing to the day-to-day setup and operation of laboratory and workshop environments. Relying on your exceptional attention to detail, you will prepare materials and equipment, support experimental work, collect and verify data, and provide technical guidance to students and staff. You will also play a key role in maintaining safe, clean, and well-organized lab spaces while supporting the development and testing of experimental procedures and ensuring established safety standards are followed.Your responsibilities will include:  

Supporting laboratory operations and experimental activities, including setting up labs and equipment in accordance with research/course schedules, preparing materials and samples, assisting with experiments, contributing to the testing and refinement of experimental procedures, and collecting and verifying data Maintaining laboratory facilities and supplies, including cleaning and sterilizing equipment and spaces, managing inventory, ordering supplies, and supporting routine maintenance activities Providing basic technical support and guidance, including demonstrating lab techniques, assisting students and staff, and supporting the use of laboratory equipment and procedures Assisting with lab support tasks, including responding to routine enquiries, updating basic documentation, supporting program materials and logistics, and supporting record-keeping Ensuring safe laboratory practices, including following established safety procedures and supporting the safe handling of equipment, materials, and chemical waste

  Essential Qualifications:  

Bachelor’s Degree or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience, preferably in biological science Minimum two (2) years of experience supporting teaching laboratory operations in a university environment, focussing on physiology, molecular genetics, pharmacology, immunology, and/or biochemistry Demonstrated experience setting up laboratory equipment and preparing materials for experiments Experience assisting with experiments, including preparing routine samples and collecting and verifying experimental data Experience troubleshooting routine technical or equipment issues Experience cleaning, sterilizing, and maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities Experience preparing solutions required for biochemistry and/or immunology Experience providing basic instruction or guidance on laboratory techniques and equipment Experience liaising with staff and course instructors to determine lab set up requirements Experience maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and materials, including glassware, dishware, chemicals, and apparatus Demonstrated ability to support or independently carry out routine experimental procedures Knowledge of health and safety practices in a laboratory environment Advanced proficiency with Office 365 Exceptional attention to detail Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain basic procedures clearly Demonstrated manual dexterity and precision in handling laboratory equipment
