Worker Type: Employee Job Post End Date: 07/12/2026 About this opportunity: Cenovus is seeking a Senior Drilling Engineer to join its Delineation / Heavy Oil team. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Drilling Engineering, this role focuses on leading well planning through drill-ready status and providing technical support during field operations. The role develops drilling programs, monitoring operational performance, managing costs, safety and environmental standards. The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise, project management skills, and a collaborative approach to working with cross-functional teams (Geology, Production, Reservoir, Completions) to drive continuous improvement across drilling activities. What you’ll do: Drilling engineering activities within the Cenovus Delineation areas, including Lloyd Thermal, Sunrise, Foster Creek, and Christina Lake assets. Additional activities in Cold Heavy oil horizontal programs. Ensure all drilling engineering activities comply with regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements. Design, execute, and continuously improve drilling programs, including well objectives, risk assessments, cost estimates, Basis of Design documentation, technical service selection, and detailed drilling programs. Monitor costs, cycle times, and KPIs to drive efficiency and consistency. Support field execution to achieve well objectives while improving safety, performance, and cost outcomes. Coordinate closely with field operations from planning through execution to maintain alignment. Conduct post-well reviews to capture lessons learned and continuously improve future programs. Collaborate cross-functionally (Completions, Production, Supply Chain) and provide technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge sharing. Who you are: Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements: Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA and 8+ years of relevant experience. Experience in thermal and heavy oil operations required; multi-basin exposure is an asset. Strong drilling engineering expertise, including BHA design, casing design, bit selection, drilling fluids, and cementing. Solid knowledge of current drilling operations, technologies, and best practices. Strong leadership skills and mentorship capabilities. Strong analytical thinking, sound judgment, and business acumen.
