Summary:

Job Title: Fabricator

Reports to: Fabrication Workshop Team Lead

Work Type: Full Time, Permanent

Salary Range: $17.60/h to $21.60/h

Location: Aurora, Ontario

The Fabricator is responsible for operating machining and metal processing equipment to produce parts according to engineering drawings, work orders, and quality standards. This role ensures safe, accurate, and efficient execution of fabrication tasks while maintaining high standards of workmanship, equipment care, and workplace organization.

The operator works closely with the Fabrication Workshop Team Lead to meet production targets and support continuous improvement initiatives.

This is a hands-on production role focused on:

Safe machine operation

Consistent quality output

Following standardized processes

The role is expected to support flexibility in a high-mix production environment, where job types and priorities may change frequently.

What You’ll Do:

1. Machine Operation & Production

  • Operate fabrication equipment including:

    • Cutting machines (saw, shear, etc.)
    • Lathes
    • Drilling machines
    • Basic CNC machines (where applicable)
  • Produce parts in accordance with work orders, drawings, and specifications.

  • Set up machines (basic setup) including tooling, fixtures, and material positioning.

  • Monitor machine operation to ensure consistent quality and efficiency.

  • Perform deburring, finishing, and basic assembly as required.

2. Drawing Interpretation & Work Execution

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, and tolerances.

  • Follow work instructions, routing steps, and production documentation.

  • Ensure correct materials, tools, and processes are used for each job.

3. Quality Control

  • Inspect parts during and after machining using measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.).
  • Ensure parts meet dimensional and visual quality requirements before moving to next process.
  • Report defects, deviations, or non-conformances to the Team Lead.
  • Maintain accurate production and inspection records as required.

4. Safety, Equipment Care & Preventive Maintenance

  • Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
  • Operate machines in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Keep work area clean and organized in accordance with 5S standards.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM) on assigned machines and tools, including cleaning, lubrication, inspection, and basic adjustments.
  • Follow established preventive maintenance schedules and checklists.
  • Conduct daily pre-use & post-use equipment checks to ensure machines are in safe and proper working condition.
  • Identify and report abnormal conditions such as unusual noise, vibration, wear, or performance issues.
  • Record maintenance activities and findings in logs as required.
  • Support the Fabrication Workshop Team Lead or Maintenance personnel during more complex maintenance or repair activities.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, or near-misses.

5. Material Handling & Workflow Support

  • Handle raw materials and finished parts carefully to prevent damage.
  • Ensure proper identification and labeling of materials and WIP.
  • Support movement of parts between workstations as required.
  • Assist in maintaining organized storage of materials and tools.

6. Inventory & Production Support

  • Use materials efficiently and minimize scrap.
  • Report material shortages or discrepancies to the Team Lead.
  • Support cycle counts or inventory checks when required.
  • Ensure proper recording of material usage and job completion in ERP or tracking systems.

7. Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency.
  • Participate in Lean, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide feedback to Team Lead on tooling, process, or quality improvements.

8. Others

  • Support necessary personnel for internal, customer and third-party quality system audits.
  • Other duties as assigned

What You’ll Bring:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1–3 years of experience in a fabrication or machining environment preferred.
  • Experience operating lathes, drills, cutting machines, or CNC equipment is an asset.
  • Basic ability to read mechanical drawings and measurements.
  • Familiarity with measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, rulers).
  • Understanding basic machining and fabrication processes.
  • Ability to follow work instructions and production procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and workmanship
