About the Role
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Location: Abbotsford, BC (and surrounding areas)
We are seeking a Fire Protection Service Trainee to work alongside and under the direct supervision of an ASTTBC-Certified Fire Protection Technician, assisting with inspections, testing, maintenance, and repairs on fire and life-safety systems in accordance with the BC Fire Code, NFPA standards, and ASTTBC requirements.
This role involves daily travel to customer sites across the Lower Mainland (Fraser Valley, Metro Vancouver, and Squamish) with your supervising technician. We aim to assign work within reasonable proximity to your home base where possible; however, travel throughout the service area is required.
You will learn directly from experienced technicians, gain hands-on experience with customers, and work toward your ASTTBC Registered Fire Protection Technician (RFPT) certification — with company-funded training and supervised experience provided throughout.
This is an excellent entry point for candidates who demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a genuine willingness to learn the trade.
Responsibilities
Assist a certified technician with inspections, testing, and maintenance of:

Fire extinguishers

Fire alarm systems
-
Emergency lighting
-
Sprinkler and suppression systems

Prepare tools, equipment, and materials for service calls and inspections

Assist with diagnosing system issues and performing repairs under direction

Complete documentation, reports, and deficiency notes accurately, learning digital inspection/reporting systems

Communicate professionally with clients and internal team members

Maintain tools, equipment, and assist with company vehicle upkeep

Actively participate in company-funded training and professional development toward RFPT certification

Attend safety meetings, toolbox talks, and required training (WHMIS, TDG, fall protection, etc.)

Ensure all work complies with applicable codes, standards, and company procedures
Requirements
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and acceptable driving record
- Eligible to enroll in ASTTBC-recognized fire protection training (e.g., BCIT Fire Protection Inspection and Testing courses)
- Willingness to work toward ASTTBC RFPT certification (company-funded)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Ability to take direction, work as part of a team, and learn new procedures quickly
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to perform physical work, including lifting up to 40 lbs, climbing ladders, working at heights, and accessing confined spaces
Preferred Experience
- Experience in fire protection or a related trade is an asset (not required)
- Shop, warehouse, delivery, or mechanical experience
- Familiarity with digital inspection/reporting systems
- Exposure to fire alarm troubleshooting and repairs

Schedule
- Monday to Friday with regular evening and weekend 'on call' rotation.
- Overtime and emergency service calls as required
- Overtime paid in accordance with BC Employment Standards
