Your career journey at ATCO has the potential to be full of new experiences, inspiring challenges, and growth without boundaries. Set your sights on how you want to grow and develop, and we’ll be right there to support you along the way. At ATCO Electric, we’ve been energizing homes, farms and businesses across north and east-central Alberta for more than 85 years. We serve nearly 229,000 customers in 242 communities and our service area covers nearly two-thirds of Alberta.

We are looking for two IT/Cybersecurity students to join the ATCO Cloud Platforms, Tools & Automation Team. Work term starts in September 2026 for 12-month period in Edmonton.

As a Co-op Data Analyst, you will work with ATCO’s Data & Analytics team to help business partners turn questions into trusted, governed datasets and insights using our Databricks lakehouse environment. You’ll support the end-to-end data lifecycle (ingestion, transformation, validation, documentation, and consumption) while also helping users understand how to use Databricks assets (e.g., curated tables, Databricks SQL, dashboards) safely and effectively. This is a hands-on role that blends data analysis, light data engineering, and stakeholder enablement.

Who you are:

  • Must be enrolled in a co-op (or internship) program at a recognized Canadian university.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program (e.g., Data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics/Statistics, or related)
  • Strong foundation in SQL and an interest in learning modern data platforms and analytics engineering practices
  • Experience with Python (preferred) and/or other analytical tooling (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau) to explore and communicate insights
  • Basic understanding of data concepts such as data quality, data modeling, ETL/ELT, and the purpose of a data lake/warehouse/lakehouse
  • Curiosity and problem-solving mindset — able to investigate data issues, ask good questions, and propose options
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings in business-friendly language
  • Comfort working with version control (e.g., Git) and documenting work (e.g., wikis, runbooks) is an asset
  • Experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, or cloud data services is an asset (we will provide training and mentorship)

What You Get to Do:

  • Partner with analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders to understand data questions and translate them into clear analysis requirements and deliverables

    • Explore and analyze curated datasets in Databricks (e.g., Databricks SQL, notebooks) to generate insights, validate assumptions, and answer business questions
    • Support data pipeline and data product work through documentation, data profiling, and validation (e.g., completeness, duplicates, outliers, schema changes)
    • Help maintain data quality practices by implementing or updating checks, logging results, and supporting issue triage with the broader team
    • Create and maintain clear documentation (data definitions, lineage notes, business logic, assumptions, and usage guidance) to improve reuse and trust
    • Support dashboard and reporting consumption by helping users access the right datasets and by validating outputs against expected business rules
    • Assist with governed access enablement by following established processes (e.g., Unity Catalog permissions, role-based access) and escalating as needed
    • Contribute to Databricks platform adoption by creating simple “how-to” guides, starter queries, and repeatable analysis templates for business users
    • Practice safe data handling by following ATCO policies and platform guardrails for sensitive and regulated data

Please note that only those selected for interviews will be contacted.
