About the role

The incumbent is accountable for the safe, productive and efficient execution of Steel work at Victoria Shipyards. Responsibilities include providing direction to charge-hands and the steel fitting workforce for all projects carried out within the shipyard, ensuring they are appropriately manned and supervised to meet schedule and customer requirements, and that all work is carried out in accordance with shipyard safety, quality and classification society standards and procedures. The incumbent shall provide support for departmental leadership, direction and motivation, ensuring that acceptable productivity and quality levels are consistently maintained.  The incumbent shall provide assistance in the initiative and direction for continued process improvement within welding department. 

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria.

What you'll do

  • Oversees steel projects by maintaining manpower loading as dictated by work schedules, providing information, planning and direction for charge-hands, monitoring projects through the various stages to ensure workmanship meets SMC Quality Policy, applicable codes, VSL Standard Operating Procedures, customer requirements and that work is completed within the allocated budget and schedule 
  • Work in conjunction with the, Welding Superintendent and Steel Superintendent, Technical Services and Procurement Services to ensure that technical information and materials meet welding and schedule requirements 
  • Work in conjunction with the appropriate department Superintendent to ensure that steel fitter charge-hands and workers comply with VSL safety and quality standards 
  • Provides leadership to charge-hands and workers by providing guidance and training where needed to maintain appropriate standards, taking disciplinary action when required, and ensuring compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations 
  • Improve departmental skill and productivity levels by liaising with Welding and Steel Superintendents and departmental charge hands in assessing skill and work habits of individual employees 
  • Ensures regular maintenance and safety inspections of shop equipment & facilities, ensuring deficiencies are quickly rectified.   
  • Allocates manpower to projects in accordance schedule and priorities, assigning workers with the skill and ability to complete tasks efficiently 
  • Monitors work progress with steel fitter charge-hands and assess project status 
  • Work in conjunction with all staff to improve worker safety and reduce incidents 
  • Ensure accurate time keeping and vacation scheduling.  
  • Work in conjunction with facility manager to ensure shop equipment is maintained and procured in a cost-effective manner 

 

What you'll bring

  • Grade 12 education plus red seal certification as a metal fabricator trade 
  • Current CSA W47.1 Steel Welding Supervisor certification would be beneficial 
  • A minimum of 5 – 7 years’ experience managing ship repair/construction projects 
  • Demonstrating a high standard of business conduct and ethics; dealing with all situations and issues with integrity and honesty 
  • Extensive knowledge of DND, Lloyds, DMV-GL, and ABS regulatory standards as they pertain to ship repair. 
  • Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written, including knowledge of correct marine terminology 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, management and workforce.  
  • Excellent technical, analytical, problem solving, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills 
  • Knowledge of SMC Corporate policies and procedures 
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings 
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures

The estimated salary for this position is $112,500 - $137,500. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
