About the role
The Electrician (309A) is responsible for the operation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, testing, and isolation of electrical systems supporting Light Rail Transit (LRT) operations. The role focuses on maintaining traction power substations, stations, stops, maintenance facilities, and associated electrical infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and uninterrupted transit service.
The successful candidate will possess strong experience with electrical apparatus, power distribution systems, and operation of equipment at 600V and above. Experience with medium-voltage (MV) systems, direct current (DC) systems, and traction power equipment is considered a strong asset.
Key Responsibilities Traction Power Substations Perform inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, isolation, and minor repairs on traction power substations. Operate and maintain low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) electrical equipment. Support switching, isolation, lockout/tagout, and permit-to-work activities. Assist in the operation and maintenance of DC traction power equipment. Participate in emergency response and restoration activities related to traction power assets. Stops and Stations Maintenance Maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems at LRT stops and passenger stations. Inspect, repair, and test lighting systems, electrical panels, communications interfaces, emergency systems, and associated equipment. Complete preventive and corrective maintenance activities. Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) Perform electrical maintenance within the Maintenance and Storage Facility, yard infrastructure, buildings, and associated systems. Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical distribution equipment, lighting systems, motor controls, and facility electrical assets. Infrastructure Maintenance Conduct routine inspections and condition assessments of electrical assets. Analyze failures and recommend corrective actions to improve reliability and performance. Interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and technical documentation. Permit and Isolation Activities Prepare and execute permits, switching procedures, isolations, lockout/tagout activities, and safe work plans. Ensure all work complies with electrical safety rules, operating procedures, and regulatory requirements. Contractor Coordination Monitor assigned subcontractor activities. Verify contractor compliance with safety, quality, and operational requirements. Coordinate access, permits, and work execution for third-party contractors. Documentation and Reporting Complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, and asset documentation. Maintain accurate records within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Participate in root cause investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications Required Ontario Certificate of Qualification – Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A). Minimum 3–5 years of electrical maintenance experience in industrial, transportation, transit, utility, railway, or infrastructure environments. Experience operating and maintaining equipment at 600V and above. Valid Class G Driver's Licence with satisfactory driving record. Strong understanding of electrical safety procedures, lockout/tagout, and permit-to-work systems. Preferred Experience with: Medium Voltage (MV) equipment Direct Current (DC) power systems Traction Power Systems Electrical substations Transit, railway, utility, or power generation environments Working at Heights Certification. Elevated Work Platform Certification. First Aid/CPR Certification. Knowledge and Skills Strong understanding of: Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) systems Power distribution equipment Electrical apparatus and control systems Motor controls, relays, switchgear, transformers, and protective devices Ability to read and interpret: Electrical schematics Single-line diagrams Technical manuals and drawings Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities. Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary maintenance team. Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills. Working Conditions Rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required. Work in substations, stations, trackside environments, maintenance facilities, and outdoor locations. Exposure to energized electrical equipment, varying weather conditions, and physically demanding work environments. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and wear required PPE. Compensation Hourly range - $42-$55 an hour

Asset Candidates with traction power experience is an asset. However, applicants with strong electrical apparatus experience and a willingness to receive specialized training in traction power substations and MV/DC systems will also be considered.
