Position Overview

The incumbent is responsible for the fabrication, maintenance, instruction, modification, and repair of millwork, hardware and other building architectural items normally associated with the carpentry trade. This position reports to and receives general direction from the Assistant Director/Director Facility Services. The incumbent acts independently in providing solutions to technical problems, referring to internal/external technical and management support, maintenance contractors and manufacturers as required. The incumbent delegates work to Utility Persons when required, directs and inspects work of Utility Persons, casual employees, non-Hospital technical staff and contractors.

Experience

Minimum five (5) years’ experience preferably in a health care facility but not limited to, structural and architectural building maintenance, ward/office furniture repair, and other specialized millwork construction/repair. Previous experience in a hospital/institutional setting preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

Grade 12 education, Manitoba Standards, required. Must be qualified as a Journeyman Carpenter (Province of Manitoba).

Qualifications And Skills

Must be conversant with the Manitoba Fire and Building Codes. Ability to interpret architectural and shop drawings. Ability to prepare sketches for fabrication and construction of millwork and minor renovations. Ability to plan, organize and execute maintenance and renovation projects utilizing staff or contractors. Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently. Ability to work in a computerized office system environment. Knowledge and use of carpentry and building power and hand tools and equipment. Other related or necessary equipment required to perform the duties of the position.

Physical Requirements

Manual dexterity for effective performance of duties. General dusty and noisy carpentry shop conditions. Exposure to hazardous fumes from glues, solvents, etc. Some heavy lifting, scaffolding and ladder work, etc., could be expected.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
