Position Information: Part-time support opportunity (classification): Regular Hourly rate: $37.51 Hours: up to 24 hours per week, Monday through Friday Reporting To: Associate Dean, Faculty of Social and Community Services Department: Faculty of Social and Community Services Campus Location: Oshawa Vacancy status: Existing vacancy Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will act as a resource and provide assistance to faculty, facilitators and students of the Pre-Service Firefighter program (PFET/PFEF) program. The employee supports student learning within the PFET/PFEF program by planning and facilitating the smooth operation of the firehall and training areas used by the program. The employee ensures the operational condition of equipment and facilities by maintaining and arranging repair of equipment, ordering materials and supplies, providing technical support as required and maintaining accurate records for the program.
The employee is expected to perform duties in accordance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (the Act) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards including, but not limited to, wearing/using protective equipment, devices, and/or clothing. The employee is expected to report to their supervisor any safety concerns, unsafe conditions or acts and any contraventions of the Act or regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, any defects in, or the absence of, protective devices or equipment. The employee is also expected to; Ensure a safe, clean, and organized workspace. Collaborate with faculty and facilitators regarding equipment and supply needs to support learning activities and labs. Control all inventory to ensure practical skills requests and needs are met throughout the academic year. Organize and maintain stock and storerooms. Determine supply and equipment needs then research product options, obtain price quotes, and prepare purchase requisitions. Once approved, complete purchase requisitions and places orders for approved supplies and equipment. Act as a technical resource regarding equipment, supplies, and learning resources. Provide assistance, as required, to staff and students by demonstrating operation of equipment, explaining procedures, and having knowledge of Durham College resources available if staff or students require referral. Ensure that equipment, and supplies are in good working condition and are set up, ready for use prior to scheduled learning activities/labs. Acquire health and safety information as applicable and ensure current Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is readily available and accessible per established procedures. Ensure that equipment and supplies are disassembled, cleaned and maintained in a secure manner following use by program team and students. Responsible for the care, maintenance, repair, operation and security of equipment and supplies, including establishing preventative/required maintenance schedules, arranging for maintenance and repair of equipment in the program, and maintaining organized electronic records for tracking of equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE), including tracking of mandatory replacement dates, sizing, maintenance records etc. All other lab support as related to the PFET/PFEF program. Enforce safety procedures and report non-compliance to their supervisor Qualifications: A minimum of a one-year certificate in Pre-Service Education and Training or related field of study Current NFPA 1001 and 1072 certifications required. Valid DZ driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract is preferred. Current Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification is preferred A clear criminal background check A minimum of two-years of work experience as a technician within the fire service field. Experience with respiratory protection equipment and working knowledge of Canadian Standards Association Group (CSA) standards Z180.1 and Z94.4 Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including MS Excel to support accurate inventory tracking records. Proficiency with Desire2Learn (D2L) and WhenToWork (W2W), or willingness to learn and use these systems. Experience supporting teaching and learning in a lab environment would be considered an asset. Strong critical thinking skills to support decision-making and appropriate referral of issues to internal or external stakeholders. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to apply principles of equity, diversity and inclusion and intersectionality when interpreting policy and responding to situations. Demonstrated financial acumen and attention to detail required to research products, prepare purchase requisitions and place orders.
