A Day in the Life

As an Environmental Planner, you’ll be responsible for assisting with multiple projects where you will have increasing interaction with our multi-disciplinary staff, regulatory agencies and clients. You will be part of a strong team of committed professionals.

The compensation range for this role is $33 to $43, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location

To thrive in this role, you’ll be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:

  • Assist clients in understanding regulatory processes, issues affecting project development and timelines, propose mitigations and advise on appropriate strategic approach for obtaining regulatory approvals.
  • Analyze, assess, and interpret development plans to recommend design solutions and mitigation strategies to reduce environmental effects.
  • Manage, draft, review and submit regulatory applications for western Canadian projects (potential for eastern Canadian project opportunities as well).
  • Execute project management responsibilities to ensure effective project delivery and successful client outcomes, including:
    • internal and external meeting management - project/field/reporting kick-offs, client update meetings, regulator and stakeholder meetings,
    • schedule development, management and tracking
    • change order management,
    • project progress updates,
    • budget development and oversight,
    • invoicing and financial tracking.
  • Preparation and review of technical proposals, work plans, cost estimates, and summary reports.
  • Interact directly with clients to provide project updates and regulatory guidance.
  • Lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams within Montrose and sub-contractors to deliver high quality results for our clients.
  • Coordinate and manage environmental field work for various environmental disciplines.
  • Maintain knowledge and tracking of environmental regulatory changes to be communicated to clients and internal Montrose teams to be adopted into project considerations.
  • Supervise junior staff and provide coaching and mentorship to developing staff members.
  • Work with senior technical advisors to ensure a high-quality product that meets our clients’ unique project needs.
  • Function effectively as a contributor to a highly collaborative team.
  • Participation in maintaining Montrose’s strong safety culture.

Your Expertise and Skills

These requirements reflect the knowledge, skills and abilities that help you do your best work here.

  • Experience in regulatory application development and submissions for Alberta Thermal Oil Sands facilities, including but not limited to new facilities, amendments to Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and Directive 023, renewals, and monitoring reports
  • EPEA applications under the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) or Environmental Protected Areas (EPA) for new facilities, amendments, and renewals and pipeline development projects.
  • Experience with environmental regulatory projects from planning through construction, into operations and finally decommissioning and reclamation.
  • Proven experience in directing and managing multi-disciplinary projects (client communications, scheduling, change order management, budgets, cost estimates, and invoicing)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing environmental and regulatory planning and permitting projects in Western Canada within a consulting environment.
  • Working knowledge of environmental and planning legislation, regulations, and procedures.
  • Project management experience
  • Experience writing and coordinating technical reports.
  • Self-motivated and possess strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to provide technical direction and mentorship to junior professionals.
  • A valid and clean driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • A degree in environmental science, biology, geography, geology, engineering, or equivalent.

The following are considered assets:

  • Professional designations such as P.Biol, P.Ag, P.Eng., P.Geo, PMP, EP etc.
  • Experience with pipeline development projects and Public Lands Act (PLA)
  • Experience with Directive 056 and Aboriginal Consultation Office (ACO) submissions
  • Project management using Workday (or equivalent software platform).
  • Experience with Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) Rule 007.
  • Familiarity with the Alberta Water Act and Wetland policy
  • Experience with federally regulated projects in Western Canada (familiarity with the Federal Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator (CER))
