The Opportunity
We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Shop Hand to support our operations in our heavy equipment shop and scrap metal yard in Olds, Alberta. This is a full-time position working Monday to Friday with some weekend work as needed. The role is ideal for an individual looking to gain hands-on experience as a heavy equipment mechanic apprentice. The Shop Hand will assist with daily shop and scrap metal yard operations, including general maintenance, cleaning, organizing tools and materials, and supporting tradespeople or technicians as needed.
How you’ll spend your time
- Assist with basic shop maintenance and cleaning tasks around the shop and yard including cleaning wash bays and pressure washing bins etc.
- Assist with organizing tools, inventory, and general shop upkeep.
- Cleaning work areas, disposing of scrap materials while maintaining a safe work environment.
- Supporting tradespeople or technicians with setup, prep work, and manual tasks.
- Other duties as assigned, including errands or minor repairs.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience as a Shop Hand considered an asset.
- Enrollment as an Apprentice in the Heavy Equipment Mechanic program considered an asset.
- Welding experience is required.
- Mechanical aptitude is required.
- Ability to perform physically demanding duties. Physical fitness is required with the ability to lift 50lbs or more, climb ladders, walk long distances, frequent bending and picking up objects off the ground etc.
- Ability to follow instructions and contribute to a safe work environment.
- Take pride and accountability in your work.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Excellent communicator who works best in a team environment.
- Ability to adapt to change and use problem solving skills while using good judgement.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Technically inclined.
This position requires candidates to
- Be able to lift 50 lbs and perform physical labour.
