Position:Senior Mechanical Designer Duration: Contract Assignment Client Location: Scarborough, ON (Hybrid – 2 Days Onsite per Week) Engagement Model: Professional Services Engagement – B2B (Incorporated Entities Only)
About the Engagement Akkodis is seeking the services of an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer consultant to support the design and development of advanced railway signalling and CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) systems for a leading transportation technology client. The engagement involves designing critical mechanical components, performing engineering simulations, and ensuring compliance with railway industry standards while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Services to be Provided Design mechanical components including CBTC racks, sub-racks, wayside enclosures, and COTS integrations using CREO and Solid Edge. Perform mechanical, thermal, and vibration simulations using industry-standard engineering tools. Develop and maintain engineering documentation, design requirements, and compliance records using tools such as DOORs and Polarion. Apply manufacturing best practices, corrosion mitigation techniques, and EMC design principles throughout the product lifecycle. Conduct vibration and thermal analysis, including PSD plots, and support validation and verification activities. Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure designs meet customer requirements and applicable railway standards. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering team members. Participate in occasional customer site visits, as required (up to three times annually).
Expertise Required Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience. 6–10 years of progressive mechanical design experience in an engineering environment. Strong proficiency in CREO Parametric and Solid Edge for mechanical design. Hands-on experience with ANSYS, CREO Advanced Simulation, IcePak, and other mechanical/thermal simulation tools. Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, material properties, fatigue failure, ingress protection (IP/NEMA ratings), and corrosion mitigation techniques. Experience with EMC design principles, including cabling, grounding, gasketing, and cable pass-throughs. Familiarity with validation and verification testing, particularly thermal and vibration testing. Experience using engineering requirements management tools such as DOORs and Polarion. Excellent communication, documentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities while working effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Nice to Have More than 10 years of experience within the Railway Signalling industry. Expertise in mechanical failure analysis, fatigue and crack propagation assessment. Experience conducting and interpreting vibration and thermal testing in laboratory and field environments. Strong knowledge of international railway standards, including CENELEC and AREMA. Experience reviewing engineering specifications, contracts, and regulatory requirements to ensure design compliance. Professional Engineer (PEO) certification. Experience mentoring engineering teams and leading complex mechanical design initiatives.
