Merlin Plastics Alberta Inc. is a leading plastic recycling company committed to sustainability, innovation, and operational excellence. We are seeking a skilled 2nd Year Electrical Apprentice to join our maintenance team and ensure the reliability and efficiency of our production equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist journeyman electricians with preventive maintenance on electrical equipment to support uptime and reliability
- Support troubleshooting and basic repairs on motors, control panels, and electrical systems under supervision
- Perform preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting on electrical equipment under the supervision of a journeyperson
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, and Canadian Electrical Code requirements to support layout and installation tasks
- Measure, cut, bend, and install conduit systems and cable assemblies following proper installation practices
- Use basic electrical testing equipment to verify circuits and assist with diagnostics (e.g., continuity, voltage checks)
- Support the testing, repair, and replacement of electrical components such as receptacles, panels, and lighting systems
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, maintenance activities, and materials used
- Follow all safety procedures and regulations, including lockout/tagout and hazard identification, as required under Alberta trade legislation
- Work under the direction of a journeyperson while developing greater independence in task execution and problem-solving
- Assist with job site organization, material handling, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment
Qualifications & Requirements:

Registered as a 2nd Year Electrician Apprentice with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training

Completion of 1st Period technical training and required on-the-job hours

Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and basic code application

Familiarity with basic electrical systems, motors, and control components

Basic troubleshooting skills using multimeters and other testing tools

Introductory knowledge of PLC systems (e.g., understanding inputs/outputs, assisting with troubleshooting and monitoring under supervision)

Understanding of lockout/tagout procedures and job site safety practices

Physically capable of lifting materials, working at heights, and using ladders or lifts

Strong willingness to learn, take direction, and develop technical skills

Ability to work both independently (on assigned tasks) and as part of a team

Good communication and organizational skill

Ability to read technical drawings and schematics

Physically capable of handling heavy equipment and working in a fast-paced environment

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with welding and fabrication
- Knowledge of PLC systems (asset)
- Forklift or other equipment certification (asset)
Work Conditions:
- Physically demanding role (lifting, standing, bending)
- Exposure to noise, dust, and moving machinery
- Overtime and weekend work may be required
