We are seeking an experienced Civil/Structural Engineer — Discipline Lead to join our Hamilton office.
This position is ideal for a senior engineer who enjoys remaining actively involved in engineering design and project execution while taking on greater leadership responsibilities. Reporting to the Discipline Manager, you will serve as both a technical leader on complex industrial projects and the direct supervisor for a team of approximately 5–10 engineers and engineering graduates.
The role combines approximately 85% technical project execution with 15% people leadership and team development, offering an excellent opportunity to influence both project success and the growth of the Civil / Structural discipline.
What You’ll Do
Project Execution and Technical Leadership
As Discipline Lead, You Will
Serve as Lead Engineer on complex heavy industrial projects. Lead multi-disciplinary project teams consisting of engineers, designers, technologists, and drafting personnel. Deliver projects safely, on schedule, within budget, and to JNE’s quality standards. Provide technical leadership throughout all phases of engineering, from feasibility studies through detailed design and construction support. Develop, review, and approve engineering calculations, specifications, technical reports, studies, and construction drawing packages. Review and stamp engineering documents in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) requirements. Coordinate effectively with process, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, and project management teams. Participate in client meetings, site investigations, condition assessments, construction reviews, and field support activities. Support project planning, scheduling, scope development, budgeting, risk management, and capital cost estimating. Contribute to proposal development, engineering estimates, business development initiatives, and client relationship management. Develop practical, innovative, and cost-effective solutions for industrial facilities and infrastructure.
Team Leadership & People Development
In addition to project responsibilities, you will provide day-to-day leadership for approximately 5–10 engineers and engineering graduates.
Responsibilities Include
Providing coaching, technical guidance, and regular feedback to direct reports. Leading onboarding activities for new team members. Mentoring junior and intermediate engineers through project exposure and career development planning. Conducting performance reviews and supporting professional development. Supporting succession planning and identifying future leadership opportunities. Monitoring training requirements and supporting progression toward professional licensure and technical specialization. Working with the Discipline Manager on workforce planning, recruitment, and resource allocation. Fostering a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team culture. Promoting a strong commitment to safety, quality, continuous improvement, and professional excellence.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario. Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience. Significant experience within heavy industrial engineering consulting environments. Demonstrated success leading multi-disciplinary engineering projects and technical teams. Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders. Ability to travel to client sites throughout Canada and the United States as required.
Heavy Industrial Experience
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in the design and assessment of industrial facilities and structures, including:
Equipment foundations Crane runway systems Industrial buildings Process structures Pipe racks Structural steel systems Reinforced concrete structures
Experience supporting projects within industries such as metals, mining, manufacturing, energy, industrial processing, or similar heavy industrial sectors is highly valued.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
The successful candidate will possess:
Thorough knowledge of North American design codes and standards, including the NBC, CSA, ASCE, AISC, ACI, and other applicable industrial design standards. Strong proficiency using structural analysis and design software such as: STAAD.Pro SAP2000 IDEA StatiCa Extensive experience designing structural steel and reinforced concrete systems for industrial facilities. Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction drawing packages. Excellent technical writing and communication skills. Experience with Front-End Loading (FEL) engineering, including: Feasibility studies Conceptual engineering Basic engineering Capital cost estimating Experience preparing engineering cost estimates, proposals, and scopes of work.
Experience supporting multi-disciplinary project execution within consulting environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience within metals, mining, manufacturing, energy, or industrial processing sectors. Experience working on brownfield facilities and retrofit projects. Previous supervisory or people leadership experience. Experience supporting business development and client relationship management. Familiarity with stage-gate project development and project execution methodologies.
Compensation
Base Salary: $93,000–$124,000 CAD annually, based on experience and qualifications.
