Department Information
The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information
As part of the Facilities Management unit of the North Slave Region of the Department of Infrastructure, the Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe, effective, and efficient operation, repair and maintenance of plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and all other mechanical equipment in all Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) occupies and or leased building facilities in the Yellowknife and North Slave area.
Located in Yellowknife, the Operating Engineer works in high security environments and carries a high degree of direct responsibility for the safety, security and comfort of building occupants.
As the Operating Engineer, you will be required to provide 24-hour standby for one full week, including weekends, every nine weeks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of steam and hydronic boiler systems, HVAC controls, DDC systems, electrical systems, energy management and control systems, plumbing, ventilation systems, oil burner maintenance and repair, sprinkler and alarm systems.
- Knowledge of safety procedures, confined spaces, asbestos and mold identification and abatement.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and operation manuals.
Typically, the above qualification would be attained by:
Completion of a fourth (4th) Class Power Engineer Certification and two (2) years of relevant experience in building maintenance/plant management field.
Basic knowledge of other building trades would be considered an asset.
Equivalencies
- Journeyperson certification as a Plumber, Oil Burner Mechanic, or Electrician, with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in building maintenance/plant management, and a requirement to obtain at least fifth (5th) Class Operating Engineer Certificate within one (1) year of hire.
- Completion of fifth (5th) Class Power Engineer Certificate with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in building maintenance/plant management.
Additional Requirements
The incumbent must complete basic security training as required and provided by the North Slave Correctional Facility.
