Job Summary

NSC Minerals is seeking an experienced and safety‑driven Rail Superintendent to oversee daily rail yard operations and ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant functioning of the site. This leadership role is responsible for supervising rail activities, supporting employees, coordinating maintenance needs, and ensuring all operational and safety documentation is completed accurately.

The Rail Superintendent works closely with the Plant Manager and plays a key role in maintaining operational excellence, supporting employee development, and fostering a strong safety culture.

Duties And Responsibilities

Responsible for ensuring that rail operations are being completed safely and efficiently. Ensures railcars are loaded and ready for release as required. Ensures that equipment involved in loading and moving railcars is in good working order. Coordinates any equipment repairs with the Plant Manager. Supervises rail work to ensure that safety procedures are being followed and that product is being loaded as required. Works with the Rail & Saskatoon Packaging Plant Manager to ensure that maintenance is scheduled and completed or to ensure adequate rail cars are on site for loading schedule. Liaises with Head Office Logistics regularly regarding loading schedules or issues as required. Ensures all safety paperwork is completed and distributed as required. Maximizes space at the rail siding to ensure cars can be picked up or dropped off in a timely manner. Requests feedback from employees regarding rail operations and safety and relays information to Plant Manager. Identifies opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs or reduce risk/hazards and discuss with Plant Manager. Conducts toolbox talks at the start of each shift. Ensures Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs) and permits are completed prior to commencing work. Encourages a culture that promotes a healthy and safe workplace. Assists Plant Manager with recruitment activities as required. Provides training and re-training to rail employees regarding equipment, hazards, processes, procedures, etc. as required. Listens to and acts on the safety concerns of employees. Assists with inspections and investigations in the event of an emergency or incident. Ensures yard and facilities are kept clean and in good condition including roadways, washroom, kitchen, locker room, exits, lighting, etc. Completes equipment checklists, inspections and Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) as required. Reports any equipment issues or malfunctions to the Rail & PP Manager or Plant Manager. Participates in toolbox talks, safety meetings or investigations as required. Completes safety and equipment training/retraining as required. Uses all required safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Minimum 5 years of experience in a heavy industrial environment with increasing levels of responsibility. Previous leadership or supervisory experience is considered an asset. A relevant diploma or certificate is considered an asset. Strong problem-solving abilities with sound judgment and decision-making skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and maintenance tracking software. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships at all levels of the organization.

Work Environment

Manual labour may be required when assisting other employees or covering for absences. Working outdoors is required year round. PPE is required to be worn at all times when working on site. Site consists of variations in temperature and noise levels. Sensory attention/mental stress can be quite high during emergency situations and/or high production periods.
