We are seeking a junior or intermediate Hydrologist, based out of our Fort McMurray, Alberta office. The ideal candidate will provide field, technical and project management support for the design and implementation of hydrology, climate, hydrogeology, and water resource components of Hatfield’s projects in northern Alberta.

This is not a fly in / fly out position, it requires relocation to Fort McMurray. Most field work days do not require camp accommodations, and employees are typically able to return home at the end of the day.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and implement hydrologic monitoring programs, including hydrometric station installation, data logger programming, surveying and streamflow measurement.
  • Interact with a multidisciplinary team to assess potential project-related and/or climate change related impacts on water resources and environmental values. This may include supporting the coordination, implementation and/or evaluation of other water resource (e.g., climate, hydrogeologic, water quality) monitoring programs.
  • Compile, manage and assess hydrometric and climate data.
  • Support permitting activities and draft proposal preparation.
  • Draft technical reports.
  • Provide technical guidance to clients and liaise with government regulators regarding environmental monitoring, environmental permitting, and assessment.
  • Compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, and client health and safety protocols.

Education and Experience

  • BSc. in engineering or sciences with some prior formal training in hydrology.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience including design, coordination and implementation of hydrometric monitoring programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with hydrometric, climate, and hydrogeologic monitoring instrumentation, datalogger programming, and telemetry systems.
  • Aptitude and experience in project management and administration is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a high standard of scientific rigor to all projects and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written – including technical, scientific writing) and problem-solving skills.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, and the ability to meet the requirements for our third-party automobile insurance policy.
  • Experience driving a pickup truck.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written – including technical, scientific writing) and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork, in a range of weather conditions, including working in remote locations and on programs that may require camp stays.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to work overtime in support of field programs.
  • Attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of adherence to field standard operating procedures and good data collection.
