Closing Date (closes at 11:59 pm on date noted below): July 4, 2026 Job Type: Intern/Coop Student (Fixed Term) (Trainee) Hourly: See below Hours per week: 35 Openings: 1 The City of Niagara Falls Planning, Building & Development Department is looking for an Intern to join our Current Development or Policy Planning team for the 2026 season. The Planning Intern will assist staff in conducting research, analysis and report writing for land use and policy planning and/or development approvals. Work Term: 4-month term (September to December) or 8-month term (September to April) Rate of Pay: $20.35 to $25.11 Rate of pay is commensurate with education level and experience. Responsibilities: Provides in-depth technical assistance, research and evaluation of options and best practices on a variety of land use policy matters, development applications, statistics and special projects through research and using surveys, reports, maps, and aerial photographs, or by inquiry and field examination. Conducts reviews of Community Improvement Plan applications. Prepares or assists with the preparation of website improvements, user guides and graphics. Prepares guidelines, staff reports, technical reports, by-laws and draft submissions on a variety of planning matters by applying planning principles and standards and setting out alternatives and recommendations. Drafts compliance letters for review by Planning Staff on a variety of issues, including heritage, environmental compliance and zoning. Develops or assists in the development of public and stakeholder consultation strategies on a variety of major planning initiatives. Prepares, makes and/or assists in presentations to committees, public information sessions and Council, utilizing graphics, meeting agendas and minutes. Supports Planning, Building and Development Department in other tasks or work plans as assigned. Requirements: Currently enrolled in a University program (Bachelors or Masters) in Urban Planning, Planning or Geography. Computer proficiency in graphics, email, word processing, Power Point and spreadsheet application. Fundamental understanding of databases and GIS. Knowledge with the Microsoft suite of products and with video conferencing software including Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Applied, technical knowledge of applicable land use planning statutes, regulations, policies, standards, processes and best practices. General knowledge of routine office procedures, practices and equipment Class “G” Driver’s License.
