What you’ll do

• Reviews construction design documents and specifications for non-routine non-standard technically complex civil work, develops a thorough understanding of the civil construction requirements, identifies potential problems with projects, and provides technical guidance for non-routine technically complex civil work to project managers, engineers or designers prior to construction. Assists the Project Manager, Engineer or Designer with tender evaluations, contract negotiations and awards by performing duties such as reviewing tenders for completeness of scope, suitability of requirements, applicability of civil design for site specific conditions, and technical constraints. • Reviews routine and non-routine standard and non-standard civil designs in various stages of planning to implementation for internally and externally designed civil projects. Provides technical solutions on civil construction issues; may develop solution in consultation with Civil Engineers and Technologists. • Negotiates and approves extra work in consultation with Civil Inspector Work Leader and Project Lead. • Operates a variety of survey equipment to layout and/or review duct bank profiles, manhole grades and locations; and for route selection, locating new and existing plant and staking and locating pole and anchors. • Assists the Civil Inspector Work Leader with delivering and receiving externally contracted inspection and survey work, by performing duties such as: evaluating the work requirements, time frame, location and complexity of the work; and by coordinating and providing information to local and regional inspection and survey work clients such as Distribution Engineering and Design. • Provides guidance and information to BC Hydro staff involved in design and claims matters related to civil assets. Investigates complaints regarding alleged encroachment on private property by BC Hydro services. • Provides leadership in civil construction inspection to enhance continuous improvement throughout projects and within BC Hydro. • Provides constructive feedback to Civil Inspector Work Leader relating to site applicability of standards and project- specific design documents (for continuous improvement). • Provides technical advice and guidance to incumbents in the Civil Inspector 1 job. Performs all of the duties of the Civil Inspector 1 job. • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties that do not affect the rating of the job.

What you bring

• Graduation from an accredited technician or technologist or public works program. • Three (3) years of utility construction experience OR two (2) years of experience as a Civil Inspector 1 or equivalent civil inspector experience in the utility industry. • Candidates must be eligible for registration with ASTTBC as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT) or as a Certified Technician (CTech) or Certified Public Works Inspector (CPWI). Eligibility for registration with ASTTBC does not apply to candidates with a degree in Engineering (or related technical field). OR • High school graduation. • Six (6) years of construction experience on projects related to electrical utility underground construction OR three (3) years of experience as a Civil Inspector 1 or equivalent civil inspector experience in the utility industry. • Completion of a basic survey course considered an asset. • Valid class five (5) driver's licence required.

• This position is affiliated with the Movement of United Professionals union (MoveUP/COPE). http://moveuptogether.ca • Job requires frequent working outdoors in all types of weather conditions and frequent exposure to fumes, noise, and dust while on construction sites. • Required to drive in adverse weather conditions, walk over rough terrain, climb in and out of trenches, lift lids of underground plant, work around heavy equipment and machinery. • Requirement to work in close proximity to energize electrical equipment.
