The purpose of this position is to implement day-to-day operations of the J. Frank Gaudet Tree Nursery including care of tree and shrub crops, maintain and operation nursery equipment and systems, maintain inventory of planting stock and records of fuel consumption, and coordinate tree and shrub shipments to clients. This position includes working evening and weekend shifts as required and on-call response to a 24-hour alarm system.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Supervising 10 seasonal staff in crop production, care and maintenance;
- Implementing the production of one gallon plant material by preparing the appropriate soil mixture, operating the filling machine, selecting quality seedlings for transplanting, monitoring quality control of the process to ensure health seedling growth and tracking daily production;
- Operation and daily maintenance of a range of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and PTO driven equipment and machinery necessary in the operation of the nursery;
- Designed the layout of the irrigation system in the outdoor nursery area based on crop requirements;
- Maintain greenhouse heating and cooling systems at an optimum level to promote growth;
- Carrying the nursery cell phone during planting season to receive seedling orders from district forest technicians and planting contractors;
- Selecting appropriate species and plant sizes to fill orders depending on client requests;
- Sole responsibility during these work periods, for the care of nursery crops in ten greenhouses;
- Responsible for securing main office complex, nursery header house, greenhouses, pump house, mechanic shop, walk-in cooler and several storage buildings in addition to entrance gates;
- Recording weekly opening and closing meter readings on bulk diesel and gas tanks at the nursery;
- Recording weekly mileage and fuel consumption;
- Receiving payment for seedlings during evenings and weekend shifts;
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent is required.
- Considerable experience operating nursery equipment including trucks, forklifts, skid steers, and tractors is required.
- Basic knowledge of daily equipment maintenance and minor repairs.
- Knowledge of greenhouse operations would be an asset.
- Supervisory experience is required.
- Knowledge of pests, pest control and pesticide handling is required along with the Pesticide Applicators Certificate.
- Plant identification knowledge is required.
- Good communication skills are required along with the ability to make good sound decisions.
- Basic computer skills are required.
- First aid/CPR are WHIMIS are required.
