Casual Animal Technicians
Primary Purpose: To assist in providing animal care in the Dairy Unit and assist with a wide range of activities associated with efficient functioning of the unit and animal well-being.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Dairy Unit Manager or Unit Faculty Supervisor, this position performs dairy cow milking, feeding and caring for livestock. Work is performed with limited supervision. It involves lifting and moving heavy feed and other supplies. Working in a facility with large animals, the incumbent is exposed to animal dander, animal waste, and unpredictability. Shift work is involved, providing coverage during the day, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays. This is a casual position.
Typical Duties/Accountabilities: Assist with milking, feeding, handling and caring for livestock under research and teaching conditions in accordance with the Canadian Council on Animal Care; operate farm equipment such as tractors, bobcat loader, manure spreaders and trucks; monitor animals for health and perform various other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Completion of Grade 12. Must hold and maintain a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Licenses: Must hold and maintain a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Experience: Recent experience in a dairy milking parlour. Experience milking and animal handling is an asset.
Skills: Demonstrated understanding of humane animal care and handling principles; record keeping skills; ability to operate farm equipment; ability to interact and communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors; and possess the ability to perform heavy physical labour.
This position is in scope of CUPE 1975.
