Position Summary
The Mechanical Designer / Engineer will support the development of new products and the improvement of existing products from concept through validation and production.
This role includes mechanical design, 3D modelling, drawing creation, engineering calculations, prototyping, testing, documentation, and production support. The successful candidate will work closely with senior engineers, project leaders, manufacturing teams, suppliers, and other departments to develop practical, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
This position is well suited to an early-career mechanical designer or engineer who enjoys hands-on product development, solving real-world problems, and seeing designs move from CAD models into physical products.
A practical and collaborative approach is essential. The role includes assembling, modifying, troubleshooting, and testing prototypes ranging from individual components to larger mechanical assemblies.
This is a full-time, 100% on-site position at our Brampton, Ontario location.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
- Create and maintain 3D models, 2D production drawings, assembly drawings, Bills of Materials, and technical documentation.
- Support the development of new products and improvements to existing products.
- Assist with engineering calculations, tolerance assessments, fit analysis, and basic structural evaluations.
- Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback from engineering, manufacturing, quality, installation, and service teams.
- Build, assemble, modify, and test prototypes for design verification and product validation.
- Prepare test procedures, test records, and engineering reports under the guidance of senior team members.
- Support root-cause analysis and troubleshooting of design, manufacturing, assembly, and field issues.
- Update designs based on test results, production feedback, supplier input, and field experience.
- Apply design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly principles.
- Select components, materials, fasteners, finishes, and manufacturing processes based on performance, cost, availability, and quality requirements.
- Work with suppliers and vendors to clarify technical requirements and resolve manufacturing concerns.
- Support production teams with fabrication, fit, assembly, and installation challenges.
- Assist with product certification and compliance activities by preparing drawings, calculations, technical files, and test documentation.
- Support design transfer to manufacturing, including documentation updates, assembly support, and training activities.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Engineering, Quality, Production, Supply Chain, Sales, Technical Support, and Marketing.
- Maintain accurate engineering records and follow document-control and change-management processes.
- Manage assigned tasks, communicate progress, and raise technical concerns or risks in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties related to the scope and responsibilities of the position.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline.
- 2-4 years of experience in mechanical design, product development, industrial equipment, machinery, manufacturing, or a related environment.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, including part modelling, assemblies, and detailed drawings.
- Experience creating manufacturing drawings and Bills of Materials.
- Basic knowledge of GD&T, tolerances, fits, and assembly drawings.
- Understanding of common manufacturing processes such as sheet metal, machining, welding, fabrication, plastics, and castings.
- Familiarity with design for manufacturing and design for assembly.
- Ability to perform basic mechanical calculations and evaluate loads, clearances, and component fit.
- Hands-on experience with prototypes, tools, testing, assembly, or manufacturing environments.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assigned tasks.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and develop technical skills.
- Commitment to workplace health and safety, product quality, and accurate engineering practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in industrial product, machinery, elevator, accessibility, automotive, material-handling, or similar equipment design.
- Experience with SolidWorks configurations, weldments, sheet metal, and large assemblies.
- Familiarity with tolerance stack-up analysis and basic FEA.
- Knowledge of hydraulic or electromechanical systems.
- Experience supporting prototype testing, product validation, or manufacturing implementation.
- Familiarity with engineering change processes and product lifecycle management systems.
- Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing practices.
- Eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario is an asset.
