About the role

On behalf of Perpetual Motion Patent (PMP), Eugenie HR is partnering with PMP to find their next Patent Agent Trainee.

Position Overview

Location: Burnaby, BC (On-Site) Compensation: $70,000 to $100,000 CAD depending on qualifications and experience.

About Perpetual Motion Patents Perpetual Motion Patents (PMP) is a Vancouver-based patent firm serving inventors, startups, entrepreneurs, and growing technology companies.

PMP clients develop innovations in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software, artificial intelligence, and related technologies. Many are startups, so PMP approach every project with an entrepreneurial mindset and a practical focus on helping businesses grow through intellectual property.

Unlike many larger firms, PMP believes great patent agents are developed through training, mentorship, and early responsibility - not years of watching from the sidelines.

What Does a Career in Patent Look Like? Patent practice is one of the few professions where engineering, writing, business, strategy, psychology, and law all collide.

One morning you may be discussing the intricacies of an AI algorithm. By the afternoon, you might be interviewing a startup founder, drafting a patent application for a robotic device, responding to a patent examiner, or helping improve the systems that keep our firm running.

Patent practice isn't for everyone. It demands curiosity, precision, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning throughout your career. If you welcome continuous growth and are ready to embrace challenges, patent could be an exceptional career for you.

What Will You Focus on? Every week is different. Based on your experience and upcoming training, you may focus on:

Drafting Canadian, U.S., and international patent applications. Interviewing inventors and understanding their technologies. Analyzing inventions and identifying patentable concepts. Conducting prior art and patentability searches. Preparing responses to patent office actions. Assisting with Canadian, U.S., and PCT patent prosecution. Helping clients develop intellectual property strategies. Meeting with startup founders and technology companies. Contributing to business development and client education. Helping improve internal systems, processes, and AI-assisted workflows.

As PMP is a scaling firm, you will have the opportunity to wear different hats, take on trusted responsibilities, and develop skills that often take years to acquire in larger organizations.

Who is This Opportunity Good For? PMP is looking for seeking a Patent Agent Trainee to work directly with experienced patent professionals while developing the skills required to become a Canadian Patent Agent.

This could be a great fit if you are: A recent engineering or science graduate. An engineer looking for an exciting career transition. Technically curious problem-solvers who enjoy understanding how things work. Excited by innovation and entrepreneurship.

Although patent experience is not required for recent graduates, existing CPATA Agents in Training and candidates with prior patent drafting or prosecution experience are strongly welcomed.

What Will You Bring to the Position? To perform this position successfully, an individual must meet the essential requirements outlined below.

Essential Requirements: Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, computer science, physics, or another technical discipline. Excellent written and spoken English. Strong analytical and problem-solving ability. Genuine curiosity about technology and innovation. High level of initiative, personal responsibility, and self-motivation. Able to learn independently and adapt quickly.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications: A background in mechanical, electrical, software, robotics, mechatronics, or related technical fields. Experience in building, designing, programming, repairing, or inventing physical products, systems, or technical solutions. Startup experience or an entrepreneurial mindset. Technical writing experience. Experience working directly with inventors or product development teams.

Are you already registered as a CPATA Agent in Training? We welcome existing trainees. Please highlight your registration status in your resume and application.

How Success Looks Like For You In Two Years? As a Patent Agent Trainee with PMP, you will be an Agent in Training (AIT) focusing on your supervised training period. Your success will depend not only on your technical ability, but also on your curiosity, initiative, communication skills, and willingness to embrace continuous learning.

If you are successful in this position, you will have built the foundation for a rewarding career as a Canadian Patent Agent.

PMP's Perspective in AI Writing? PMP encourages the responsible use of AI tools to improve productivity and polish written work.

However, successful patent agents must think critically, understand complex technology, communicate precisely, and exercise independent judgment. AI can enhance work productivity - but it must not replace your technical reasoning or your ability to write clearly.

Ready to Apply? If you are ready for this opportunity, please submit directly through LinkedIn with your resume and a cover letter explaining why patent practice interests you.

Thank you for your interest in joining Perpetual Motion Patents. Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for next steps.
