Hatfield Consultants is seeking a junior or intermediate Water Resources Specialist to join our Water Resources Group in Fort McMurray, Alberta. As part of this dynamic team, the Water Resources Specialist will support the design and implementation of hydrology, hydrogeology, and/or climate components of Hatfield’s environmental management projects in Northern Alberta.

This is not a fly in/fly out position and requires relocation to Fort McMurray. Most field work days do not require camp accommodations, and employees are typically able to return home at the end of the day.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and lead field ground water, hydrogeology, hydrometric or climate programs.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to collect data to assess potential project-related and/or climate change related impacts with respect to water resources and environmental values.
  • Assess and interpret hydrogeologic, hydrometric or climate data, and draft technical reports.
  • Provide technical guidance to the team regarding environmental monitoring and environmental permitting.
  • Support on-going data management and reporting functions.
  • Support research and analytical tasks including data collection, compilation, analysis, statistical and deterministic modeling.
  • Communicate technical information efficiently and effectively (verbal and written).
  • Compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, and client health and safety protocols.

Education and Experience

  • Formal education in environmental or earth sciences including but not limited to: biology, hydrology, hydrogeology, geology, chemistry or engineering.
  • A minimum of 2 years water resource monitoring experience.
  • Experience with hydrogeologic, hydrometric, or climate monitoring instrumentation, datalogger programming, and telemetry systems.
  • Aptitude and experience in project management/project coordination and administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead / mentor junior staff.
  • Experience and interest in field work.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, and the ability to meet the requirements for our third-party automobile insurance policy.
  • Experience driving a pickup truck.

Other Assets/Skills

  • Comfortable using technology and with a desire to learn how to operate a variety of environmental monitoring systems such as dataloggers and software packages.
  • Ability to work in teams of technicians with varying levels of experience and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork, in a range of weather conditions, including working in remote locations and on programs that may require camp stays.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to work overtime in support of field programs.
  • Attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of adherence to field standard operating procedures and good data collection.
