Environmental Engineering Technologist

The City of Courtenay invites applications for the full-time regular position of "Environmental Engineering Technologist” in the Environmental Division of the Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering Department. This is a union position and is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the current Collective Agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.

The Environmental Engineering Technologist, working with the Manager of Environmental Engineering, assesses climate hazards and environmental risks, identifies options to reduce risks, and manages projects to build resilience.

Projects relate to rainwater management and green infrastructure; stormwater and drainage systems; shoreline erosion and slope stability; water quality; flood management; greenhouse gas emission reduction, air quality and environmental stewardship.

This involves directing and supporting consultants and contractors, tracking and monitoring project budgets, reviewing drawings and reports, completing site visits, drafting staff reports for council, facilitating meetings, and collaborating with interest holders.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree or diploma in civil or environmental engineering, environmental science, environmental technology, geoscience, geography or equivalent from a recognized educational institution.

  • Eligible for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC as a P. Eng or EIT; or eligible for registration with Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC as an AScT.

  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License.

  • Considerable experience (3-5 years) in environmental or civil engineering, rainwater management, environmental monitoring, climate risk assessment, or green infrastructure.

  • Sound experience in project or program management and contract administration.

  • Sound experience in the use of MS Office suite, and GIS.

  • Thorough knowledge of environmental engineering principles, terminology, practices and techniques.

  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply regulations, bylaws, policies, procedures, engineering design standards and specifications.

  • Ability to think critically and solve problems. Capacity to understand complex systems from multiple perspectives and recommend solutions to address key concerns.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Strong office computer skills: MS Office, MS Project, GIS.

  • Ability to coordinate contractors and consultants in a professional and timely manner.

  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.

  • Physical ability to stand and walk frequently throughout the day; occasionally attend and inspect construction sites including climbing in and out of ditches and trenches; ability to work in inclement weather.

The current (2024) hourly wage rate is $40.33 based on a 35-hour work week (Schedule “A”).
