Reporting to the Electrical Coordinator, the Programming Specialist will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring the control system. He or she will also be involved in project development. He or she must be able to program controllers, operating interfaces, and databases. Based at the Windfall site, located in the Northern Quebec region, the specialist will work on a schedule of 15 days on, followed by 13 days off. Transportation, lodging, and meals provided.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Assist the engineer and/or senior technician in the design, drafting, and technical implementation of the instrumentation and automation aspects of projects;

  • Controller programming;

  • Programming operator interfaces;

  • Specifying instrumentation;

  • Preparing detailed instrumentation drawings and P&ids;

  • Monitoring completed projects and operations;

  • Conducting pre-operational checks (POCs) and commissioning;

  • Updating drawings and documentation;

  • Collaborating with other disciplines;

  • Working with the planning department to develop preventive maintenance schedules and procedures;

  • Streamlining and monitoring DCS alarms;

  • Participating in the development of operator training programs;

  • Train operators on the operation of human-machine interfaces;

  • Comply at all times with health, safety, and environmental policies and rules;

  • Perform any other tasks related to the programming and automation specialist position that are relevant to the success of the project.

Required qualifications

  • (DEC) or (AEC) in instrumentation and control or automation;
  • At least 3 years of experience in a similar position;
  • Functional spoken and written English, with the ability to read, understand, and write technical documents in English;
  • Experience in underground mining (a plus);
  • Hold mining modules 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7;
  • Hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Technical skills

  • Knowledge of:
  • ABB ACS880 variable speed drive;
  • EATON C445 and Schneider TeSysT intelligent starters;
  • Programming languages (LADDER, GRAFCET, FBD, ST);
  • Communication protocols: PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, OPC UA, and Modbus;
  • Basic knowledge of networking;
  • Honeywell Experion PKS and Emerson DeltaV DCS, and AutoCAD (a plus).

Basic skills

  • Ability to solve problems and diagnose issues;

  • Sense of priorities and urgency;

  • Ability to work as part of a team through collaboration, information sharing, and effective communication;

  • Strong organizational, planning, and priority-setting skills;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;

  • Accountability for the proper functioning of process control;

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
