Job Description
The Signage Designer / Traffic Signing Specialist leads permanent signage design for major transit infrastructure projects in Hamilton, ON, Canada, operating within a hybrid work model. This role supports corridor-wide transportation design with a focus on regulatory, wayfinding, and multimodal signage integration.
The position involves developing signage plans across transit, roadway, and active transportation infrastructure, ensuring alignment with engineering standards and municipal requirements. Responsibilities span design development, multidisciplinary coordination, and compliance with the Ontario Traffic Manual and project specifications. Work contributes to all project phases, including planning, detailed design, stakeholder coordination, and implementation.
The ideal candidate brings 5–10+ years of experience in traffic engineering or roadway design, with demonstrated expertise in signage systems, corridor integration, and multimodal transportation environments.
Develop and design permanent signage plans for the Hamilton LRT corridor, including regulatory, warning, guide, parking, loading, and multimodal wayfinding signage. Prepare comprehensive sign placement plans, sign schedules, and supporting design documentation in accordance with project requirements. Integrate signage designs with roadway geometry, intersections, transit stops, pedestrian crossings, cycling facilities, and other active transportation infrastructure. Coordinate with roadway, traffic, transit, and multidisciplinary design teams to ensure signage is effectively incorporated into corridor-wide designs. Review and apply applicable standards, guidelines, and best practices, including the Ontario Traffic Manual and municipal signing requirements. Evaluate signage requirements to support safe, efficient, and user-friendly navigation for motorists, transit users, pedestrians, and cyclists. Ensure all signage deliverables comply with design standards, contract requirements, and project specifications. Participate in design reviews, stakeholder consultations, and coordination meetings to resolve signage-related issues and maintain project consistency. Support project planning, design development, and implementation activities through all project phases. Maintain accurate records, documentation, and revisions to signage plans and schedules.
Qualifications
Required
5–10+ years of experience in traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or roadway infrastructure design. Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related discipline. Proven experience preparing roadway signage plans, sign schedules, and technical signing documentation. Strong knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM), municipal signage standards, and roadway design principles. Experience integrating signage design with roadway geometry, intersections, transit stops, pedestrian crossings, and cycling infrastructure. Proficiency with CAD-based design software and transportation design workflows. Experience delivering infrastructure projects in compliance with design standards, specifications, and contract requirements. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Effective communication and multidisciplinary coordination skills. Assets
Professional designation such as C.E.T., AScT, EIT, or P.Eng. Experience with multimodal wayfinding systems and integrated transportation planning projects. Familiarity with curbside management strategies and urban corridor projects. Experience supporting stakeholder consultations or public-facing infrastructure initiatives.
