Mold Designer / Surfacer (NX Software)
Location: Oldcastle (Windsor-Essex), Ontario Industry: Automotive Plastic Injection Molding
Position Overview
A well-established automotive tool & mold manufacturer located in the Oldcastle/Windsor industrial corridor is seeking an experienced Mold Designer / Surfacer with Siemens NX expertise to join its engineering team.
This role is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, surfacing, and detailing high-precision plastic injection molds for automotive and industrial applications. The successful candidate will translate customer part data into accurate 3D CAD models, ensuring manufacturability, structural integrity, and production efficiency.
Key Responsibilities- 3D CAD Modeling & Surfacing
- Develop complex 3D solid and surface models using Siemens NX
- Create detailed core and cavity designs
- Build Class-A/B/C surfaces where required
- Ensure accurate parting lines, shut-offs, and lifter/slide interfaces
Mold Design & Engineering Systems
- Design complete injection mold systems including:
- Cooling channels
- Ejection systems
- Slides and lifters
- Hot runner systems
- Hydraulic and mechanical actions
- Ensure designs meet automotive tolerances and quality standards
- Feasibility & Analysis
- Participate in DFM (Design for Manufacturability) reviews
- Support mold flow analysis and cooling validation
- Evaluate tooling feasibility prior to machining release
Customer & Internal Collaboration
- Review CAD data and specifications with customers
- Participate in internal design reviews
- Coordinate closely with toolmakers, CNC programmers, and project managers
Manufacturing Readiness
- Prepare complete and accurate tool packages for CNC programming
- Ensure designs align with internal machining standards and shop capabilities
- Support troubleshooting during mold build and tryout phases
QualificationsEducation
- College diploma or apprenticeship in:
- Mechanical Engineering Technology
- Tool & Die Design
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Mechanical Drafting
Experience
- 3?5+ years of plastic injection mold design experience
- Automotive tooling experience strongly preferred
- Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced mold shop environment
Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency in Siemens NX (Unigraphics)
- Solid understanding of:
- Plastic injection mold construction
- Tool steels and mold materials
- Automotive quality standards
- Ability to interpret customer CAD data and GD&T
Soft Skills
- High attention to detail
- Strong problem-solving ability
- Ability to manage deadlines and multiple active projects
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
