Our Water Services Department is seeking a Surveyor who will provide survey/geomatic services to support Metro Vancouver departments engaged in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of water, sewer, solid waste systems and other regional infrastructure. This position involves a combination of field and office-based work, with a primary focus on office responsibilities related to survey data quality control and assurance, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of survey information. You will support the integration of survey field data into CAD workflows and related systems, while overseeing the processing, validation, and proper management and storage of survey data in accordance with established standards and best practices.

This role: (The duties described hereunder are to be representative of the position and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.)

  • Supervise and direct one or more Survey Assistants.
  • Co-ordinate crew(s) and equipment for survey projects.
  • Perform: control, topographical, construction layout, hydrographic, as-built, settlement monitoring, quantity, utility locates and other surveys as required.
  • Perform surveys using GPS.
  • Maintain lines and grades on construction projects.
  • Perform all required survey calculations and procedures.
  • Perform precise benchmark runs.
  • Utilize a computer to extract data from electronic survey equipment and edit the information for presentation and electronic filing.
  • Use a computer for writing memorandums and preparing other engineering survey related material.
  • Recommend purchase or rental of survey equipment.
  • Ensure that routine maintenance of equipment is performed.
  • Obtain survey information from Land Titles offices, engineering firms, municipal offices, etc.
  • Record and reduce all survey notes neatly and accurately, including properly indexing field books.
  • Use electronic pipe and metal detection equipment.
  • May be requested to act for Senior Surveyor as required.
  • Perform other related duties.

To be successful, you have:

  • Diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology from BCIT or other recognized technical institute plus at least six years of directly related and progressive survey experience.
  • Valid BC drivers licence.
  • Considerable experience in the use of conventional and electronic survey instruments, and hydrographic survey equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of tidal datum and tables.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard engineering terminology and applicable practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Ability to communicate and deal effectively with Metro Vancouver staff, outside organizations, contractors and the public.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety procedures and WorkSafe regulations and ability to apply regulations.
  • Considerable experience in the use of computers and applicable software.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff.
  • Membership, or eligibility for membership, as a Technologist with the Association of Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC.
