The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily, hands-on maintenance and operation of an arena facility. This includes performing regular cleaning and custodial duties, supporting facility set-up and tear-down for programs, rentals, and events, conducting routine inspections, and completing general building maintenance and minor repairs. The role supports year-round operations, including both ice and non-ice seasons such as dry floor activities, camps, and community events. The position works collaboratively with arena staff and other departments to ensure the facility is safe, clean, and welcoming for the public. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.
Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities:
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in mechanical and facility maintenance required. Experience must include hands-on work with mechanical systems, equipment repairs, and cleaning. Experience in an arena facility is preferred. Equivalent experience in related environments (e.g., marine, industrial, or institutional settings) may be considered.
- Completion of a Building Service Worker certificate or equivalent training in facility maintenance is required..
- Possession of a valid safety-oriented first aid including CPR Level C is considered an asset.
- Proven ability to perform physical, hands-on maintenance work, including cleaning, basic repairs, and use of tools and equipment.
- Demonstrable ability to assist in planning, directing, guiding and coordinating the work activities of employees; assigning and monitoring work duties and responsibilities; establishing and modifying work methods, schedules and priorities while supporting ongoing training and skill development.
- Basic experience and ability in preparing requisitions for supplies, materials and equipment, monitoring maintenance expenditures and planning for efficient lifecycling of equipment.
- In possession of good skills in communication, public relations, problem solving, scheduling work, team leadership, addressing co-worker and public concerns and enforcing policies and procedures.
- Demonstrable skills with Windows networked environment, including the practical use of Microsoft Office programs, email software, and facility booking software.
- Demonstrable ability to undertake self-directed facility repairs, including plumbing, HVAC systems, fitness equipment, minor carpentry, painting, tiling, and minor electrical with the operation of power tools.
- Independence of judgment, and capability of working under minimal supervision recognizing and addressing liability risks.
- Working knowledge of and commitment to WorkSafe BC, Ministry of Health and the BC Safety Authority regulations and safety procedures and other related regulatory requirements as related to the safe operation of an arena facility.
- The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
- Ability to work a variety of hours, which will include shift and weekend work.
