Department Information
The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information
The Maintenance Engineering Technologist position is based in Hay River, and supports the maintenance engineering team in delivering engineering and technical services for Capital and O&M programs across the North Slave, South Slave, Fort Simpson, and Inuvik regions. The role provides technical support for the Maintenance Management System (MMS) and Equipment Management System (EMS), assists with Capital and O&M project delivery, and supports the administration of the Public Highways Act. The incumbent also helps review the NWT Highway System and update highway maintenance standards. Working collaboratively on multi-regional projects ranging from small-scale to major capital initiatives, the position ensures programs are delivered efficiently and within budget, directly impacting highway operations and expenditures across the territory.
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of computers particularly spreadsheets, word processing, project management software, asset management software and AutoCAD drafting.
- Knowledge of northern soil conditions, environment and construction practices.
- Knowledge in developing and maintaining Access database systems.
- Ability to survey using standard survey equipment.
- Ability to produce contract specifications, technical reports and other correspondence.
Typically attained by
Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology with 2 years' experience in highway construction and highway maintenance or related work. Completion of AutoCAD and other engineering related computer courses. Equivalent field experience of a junior capacity will be considered on a case-by-case basis - emphasis on highways, transportation and infrastructure related knowledge. Valid Class 5 NWT Driver¿s Licence or eligible to obtain an NWT driver¿s licence.
Equivalencies may include;
- Degree in Civil Engineering Technology with 1 years¿ experience in highway construction and highway maintenance or related work. Completion of AutoCAD and other engineering related computer courses. Equivalent field experience of a junior capacity will be considered on a case-by-case basis - emphasis on highways, transportation and infrastructure related knowledge.
