About the Role:

The Fire Protection Engineer-in-Training (EIT) plays a critical role in supporting the design, analysis, and implementation of fire protection systems to ensure the safety of buildings and their occupants. This position involves collaborating with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams to develop fire safety strategies that comply with Canadian codes and standards. The Fire Protection EIT will assist in conducting risk assessments, preparing technical reports, and reviewing architectural and engineering drawings to identify potential fire hazards. Through hands-on experience and mentorship, the EIT will develop expertise in fire dynamics, suppression systems, and life safety systems, contributing to innovative and effective fire protection solutions. Ultimately, this role is designed to build foundational knowledge and skills necessary for professional engineering licensure while making a tangible impact on public safety and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Enrollment or eligibility for enrollment as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with a provincial engineering regulatory body in Canada.
  • Basic understanding of Canadian fire codes, standards, and regulations such as the National Fire Code of Canada and NFPA standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with engineering design software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or coursework related to fire protection engineering principles and systems.
  • Knowledge of fire modeling software such as PyroSim or FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or Revit for reviewing and producing engineering drawings.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical writing and client interaction.
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in fire protection or related engineering fields.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and evaluation of fire protection systems including sprinklers, alarms, and smoke control systems.
  • Conduct fire risk assessments and hazard analyses for various building types and occupancies.
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings to ensure compliance with fire codes and standards.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, calculations, and documentation to support fire protection designs.
  • Collaborate with project teams, clients, and regulatory authorities to address fire safety requirements and resolve design challenges.
  • Participate in site visits and inspections to verify installation and performance of fire protection systems.
  • Support senior engineers in research and development of new fire protection technologies and methodologies.

Skills:

The Fire Protection EIT will apply their technical knowledge daily to analyze fire safety risks and develop compliant fire protection designs. Strong analytical skills enable the candidate to interpret complex codes and standards, ensuring all designs meet regulatory requirements. Communication skills are essential for preparing clear technical reports and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and clients. Proficiency with design and modeling software supports the creation and review of detailed engineering drawings and simulations. Additionally, problem-solving abilities are critical when addressing design challenges and optimizing fire protection solutions to enhance safety and functionality.
