About the role

This is a full-time position within the bargaining unit of the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (Local 343).

JOB SUMMARY: The primary responsibility of the Scientific Writer/Editor is to write, review, and edit academic articles developed by the RNAO Research Unit within the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) for submission to peer reviewed journals. The focus is on executing academic content creation and/or co- creation, ensuring scientific rigour and accuracy in research and development; assuring scientifically accurate and meaningful communications to end-users; and providing input on the development/use of scientific materials that are developed within RNAO Research Unit.

This position, housed within the RNAO Research Unit and reporting to its Director, requires communication with RNAO’s CEO and the communications department -- to ensure overall RNAO’s goals in respect to academic publications are achieved and RNAO’s overall policies, style guides and branding are adhered to.

RESPONSIBILITIES · Compose and deliver to various teams draft manuscripts, literature reviews, conference abstracts, and other academic materials, as directed. · Collaborate with subject matter experts and Research Unit staff to write, review and edit academic articles for submission to peer-reviewed journals, research papers, book chapters, research grants. · Review, fine edit and format to ensure writing is cohesive, clear, concise, grammatically correct, consistent, well organized and appealing while adhering to RNAO’s style guide and/or to targeted publications guidelines. · Work closely with subject matter experts to assess and disseminate in-depth knowledge in clinical and relational areas, through peer-reviewed publications. · Organize and display information in a way that promotes understanding, including the use of charts, tables, illustrations, images and infographics and collaborate with RNAO’s communication team as required. · Coach and build capacity of Research Unit staff and RNAO partners understanding of academic writing (e.g., journal article) as well as plain language principles for knowledge mobilization among Research Unit team members and other RNAO staff. · Other duties related to the role, as assigned by the Director, Research Unit.

SKILL, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE: · Master’s degree with outstanding research, analytical and writing skills, are required. · Proven experience as a scientific content writer or related role · Outstanding editing expertise · Knowledge of academic writing standards and styles · Experience creating DITA- compliant documentation. · Sound knowledge of common referencing styles such as APA and MLA · Working knowledge of online search engines, libraries and academic research databases · Ability to collaborate with assigned teams on multiple projects, in a positive manner · Ability to produce documents without any grammatical errors · Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and ensuring content is accessible to various audiences. · Fluent understanding of AODA requirements. · Proficiency in MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat, with advanced expertise in Microsoft Word, including use of styles, layout, templates, referencing and formatting. · Proficiency using bibliographic software, such as Zotero.

EFFORT: · Workflow requires meeting regular deadlines that may require an increase in speed and re- prioritizing the workload. · Ability to work as a team member and independently with a high degree of accuracy. · Participation in multiple projects, simultaneously. · Concentration is required for short and long periods of time to process data. · Sight, touch and hearing are used to operate a computer and review information. · Sitting at the computer is required regularly, as well as walking, standing and operating equipment to perform the duties of the job.

WORKING CONDITIONS: · Works in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to lack of privacy, noise, distractions/interruptions, or stress from multiple demands. · Typical conditions are such that no risk of injury is present.

NOTES: This post is for an existing vacancy. The starting annual salary for this position is $ 81,718.44. We comprehensively evaluate a variety of factors to determine fair compensation, including experience, specific job-related knowledge and skills, as well as relevant educational and specialty training.
