Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join our Water team. The role will be based in our Ottawa office (hybrid).
The role of the Senior Civil Engineer is to work on complex and exciting projects both independently and as a team member. In this position you could work as a lead design engineer, project technical lead, project manager or a combination of roles to guide your projects to successful outcomes for the communities we work with. As a Senior Engineer, people leadership skills are essential to achieving success on multi-discipline teams and to mentoring younger staff both technically and professionally.
You will join a high-performing, forward-thinking team that supports clients in managing existing water, sanitary and storm infrastructure, and planning and designing new systems. You will have the opportunity to contribute to projects of regional and national significance. You will join a strong network of water engineering professionals, and will provide senior-level technical guidance to more junior colleagues, while having the opportunity to work with and learn from industry-leading experts.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead projects of high complexity, interfacing with clients, performing technical design tasks, and servicing as Engineer-of-Record.
- Oversee and guide work completed by junior and intermediate staff, providing mentorship through review and discussion.
- Provide technical leadership for civil related projects and may serve as Engineer-of-Record on projects.
- Perform Project Management and/or Project Technical Lead duties on projects, managing project teams and financial performance of project budgets.
- Develop clear work plans, manage scope, schedule, and budget, and proactively identify and manage delivery risk.
- Participate in proposal preparation, including scope development, methodology, and technical review.
- Lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owners and contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.
- Conduct quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.
Representative Project Types:
Our team provides a wide range of services to municipal, federal, institutional, industrial and private clients. Depending on your specific expertise and experience, projects may include:
- All sizes, scales and complexities of linear water, sanitary and storm conveyance; stormwater management; and site civil infrastructure.
- Condition assessment, renewal planning, Class Environmental Assessment and Master Planning.
- Preliminary and detailed design, tendering, and services during construction.
- Standalone trunk water and sewer conveyance infrastructure by open cut and trenchless methods; local water and sewer infrastructure and renewals
- Roles within Traditional (Design-Bid-Build), Design-Build, and emerging project delivery structures.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Demonstrated efficient project management and technical leadership of assigned tasks on multiple concurrent projects.
- Understand client expectations, budgeting, proposal writing, and a commitment to high quality deliverables.
- Strong understanding of Ontario municipal, provincial, conservation authority, and federal design standards and permitting processes
- Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
- Strong knowledge of civil systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Advanced understanding of civil engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others.
- Strong presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Demonstrated creativity, foresight and engineering judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
- Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite is required; proficiency in engineering applications such as AutoCAD and MicroStation software packages are considered an asset.
- Technical expertise and experience to include strong knowledge including means and methods, materials, and industry standards in one or more of the following areas: - Trunk linear municipal infrastructure design
- Condition assessment and rehabilitation of linear municipal infrastructure
- Site development (servicing and site grading)
- Stormwater management infrastructure design
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (or able to obtain PEO licensure).
- Minimum of 10 years of experience.
Work Environment
Typical office environment involving extended computer-based work. Field work may be required periodically and may include exposure to the elements.

Pay Range:
- Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$114,600.00 - $164,600.00 Annually
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
