We need you to join our team at the Ministry of Transportation to perform and assess engineering or project control surveys and other data collection for the planning, design, construction and operation of transportation facilities as well as perform legal surveys for the acquisition and disposal of property.

About the job

In this role, under the direction of a Senior Party Chief, you will:

Conduct and verify engineering, legal and project control surveys and other data collections using a variety of survey methodologies and equipment
Perform legal surveys for the acquisition and disposal of property
Verify mathematical computations and assess the accuracy of field measurements and existing surveys
Comply with all occupational health and safety acts, regulations and guidelines

Note: This position requires physically demanding outdoor work under various weather conditions and travelling extensively within the region to various job sites.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

You have:

knowledge of the use of conventional and automated survey equipment (e.g. global positioning receivers, data collectors, Total Station, digital levels) and data collection techniques and procedures
knowledge of surveying terminology and standards (e.g. feature codes, symbology for field notes)
knowledge of survey related mathematics, including geometry, trigonometry and computer hardware (e.g. data collectors, laptop computers, printers) and application software (e.g. data collection, coordinate geometry)
knowledge of project control surveying (e.g. horizontal and vertical datums, map projections and accuracy standards)
knowledge of the use of aerial photography in interpreting and comparing features on the photo to the features on the ground
knowledge of traffic control procedures, safety procedures and equipment to work safely in hazardous situations (e.g. immediately adjacent to high speed traffic, wearing of fall arrest harnesses in the vicinity of rock cuts, wearing of life jackets near waterways, cutting trees with chainsaws)
knowledge of legal survey practices and procedures and a general awareness of the applicable statues and regulations

Analytical, Evaluative, Communication and Interpersonal Skills

You have proven interpretative, evaluative and analytical skills to understand survey plans, assess physical evidence, determine most appropriate survey methodology and determine completeness and accuracy of data
You can respond courteously to questions and concerns and to determine what information may be communicated to property owners and the general public while conducting field surveys
You can prepare written notes and reports
