About the Role

The Senior Azure Engineer (Azure Consultant) is a key technical role responsible for designing, delivering, and supporting modern cloud and hybrid IT platforms for our customers. This individual will combine strong technical expertise with a consultative approach, helping customers adopt and optimise Microsoft Azure solutions in line with their business objectives.

Working closely with customers, internal delivery teams, and pre-sales functions, the role involves translating requirements into secure, scalable, and cost-effective solutions. The successful candidate will lead technical discussions, contribute to solution design, and provide guidance to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

A strong focus on collaboration and continuous improvement is key. The Senior Azure Engineer will work with colleagues across engineering, security, and service teams to implement best practices, improve automation, and enhance service reliability. There is also an expectation to contribute to pre-sales activities, supporting solution scoping, estimations, and customer proposals. Regular travel to customer sites will be a key part of the role.

What we expect

Cloud Engineering & Architecture

Target-State Design: Own the end-to-end design of scalable, reliable, and cost-effective platforms on Microsoft Azure. Make and defend critical architectural trade-offs regarding resilience, performance, and cost. Consulting: Run technical discovery workshops, navigate ambiguous legacy environments, and present complex architectures and cloud migration strategies to both technical teams and executive-level audiences. There is a requirement to travel to a customer site on a weekly or bi weekly basis Automate by Default: Implement comprehensive infrastructure as code using Terraform or Azure Bicep. Automate the deployment and management of cloud environments, ensuring fault tolerance, redundancy, and disaster recovery are baked in from day one. Platform Governance: Establish and uphold platform standards for IaC, CI/CD, security, observability, and reliability across various client engagements. Pre-Sales & Scoping: Partner with account and pre-sales teams to support pre-sales activity, including technical scoping, effort estimation, and proposal shaping. Migration & Optimisation: Lead cloud migration strategies (lift-and-shift, hybrid extensions, or refactoring) and continuously optimize Azure spend and resource utilisation. Security & Compliance: Deploy Azure security best practices using services such as Azure Policy, Azure Key Vault, Defender for Cloud, and clearly defined RBAC controls.

Windows Server & Services Administration

Server Lifecycle Management: Oversee the provisioning, patching (via Azure Update Manager or WSUS), hardening, and troubleshooting of Windows Server environments (2019/2022/2025). Hybrid Identity: Manage and optimise Active Directory Domain Services and ensure seamless synchronization with Microsoft Entra ID. Core Network Services: Administer and maintain enterprise Windows networking services, including DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy Objects (GPOs).

DevOps & Automation

Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Champion the automation of infrastructure deployment using tools like Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates. CI/CD Pipelines: Design, build, and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions for seamless application and infrastructure deployment. Enterprise Infrastructure: Experienced in configuring and hardening base operating systems (Windows Server and enterprise Linux distributions like RHEL or Ubuntu) within production settings, preferably utilising configuration tools like Ansible. Monitoring & Alerting: Set up comprehensive observability using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and other SaaS or open-source monitoring solutions.

Desirable Skills

Core Azure Expertise

Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience engineering and administering enterprise-level Microsoft Azure environments. Compute & Networking: Deep knowledge of Azure VMs, App Services, AKS (Azure Kubernetes Service), Virtual Networks (VNets), ExpressRoute, and Azure Load Balancers. Identity & Access: Strong understanding of Microsoft Entra ID , Conditional Access policies, and Identity Governance.

DevOps & Automation (Highly Desired)

Proficiency with Terraform or Azure Bicep. Hands-on experience managing pipelines in Azure DevOps or GitHub. Strong scripting skills in PowerShell, Bash, or Python. Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

Windows Server & Services

Expertise in Windows Server administration (including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy). Experience managing IIS (Internet Information Services) web servers. Familiarity with Azure File Sync or hybrid storage configurations. Proven track record of automating Windows tasks using advanced PowerShell scripting.

Certifications

Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) Microsoft Certified: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) Any legacy Windows Server certifications (MCSA/MCSE) or equivalent practical experience.
