Sunnybrook Research Institute is the research enterprise of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, a teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Research spans three Toronto-based campuses, eight programs and three scientific platforms. The Physical Sciences Platform at Sunnybrook Research Institute supports leading-edge research in imaging, engineering, and physiological sciences. This summer student position is embedded within the Vascular Surgery research group, working alongside vascular surgeons and clinical research staff to support studies focused on vascular health and disease. The role offers hands-on exposure to the clinical research environment at one of Canada’s premier academic health sciences centres.

Summary of Duties:

Under the supervision of vascular surgeons and clinical research staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the summer student will support ongoing clinical research projects related to vascular health and disease. Key duties include:

  • Assisting with data collection, entry, and organization for clinical research studies in vascular surgery

  • Supporting literature searches and summarizing research articles relevant to ongoing studies

  • Preparing and maintaining research documentation, forms, and databases in accordance with study protocols

  • Participating in research team meetings and contributing to discussions under the guidance of supervising staff

  • Assisting with the preparation of research materials, presentations, and reports as required

  • Supporting administrative tasks related to research coordination, including scheduling, filing, and correspondence

  • Adhering to all hospital policies, privacy regulations, and research ethics guidelines (e.g., PHIPA, REB requirements)

  • Other duties as assigned to support the vascular research team

Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in a high school program (Grade 10–12 preferred); interest in health sciences, biology, or a related field is considered a strong asset

  • Strong academic standing, particularly in science and mathematics courses
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with basic data entry is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact respectfully with patients, hospital staff, and research personnel in a professional clinical environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient and research information in accordance with hospital privacy policies
  • Volunteer or extracurricular experience in a healthcare, community, or science-related setting is considered an asset
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the summer placement
